Wormy Amanitas
    #5321801 - 02/20/06 09:12 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

A few weeks ago I ordered some amanita pantherina caps from an online store. I ended up noticing a whole bunch of little dead worms on them and, even though I did eventually go through the caps with a pair of tweezers, I'm wondering if I should even still partake. The crappy part is that I already ate about 1/4 of what I got. I didn't notice the worms until after that point. This was only my second experience with amanitas so I'm a newbie in the world of amanitas still. I ate about 7g and undoubtedly ate a few little worms in the process. The thing is though that I'm still a bit grossed out by the thought of eating what's left. I'm wondering, first of all, if it's a good idea and, second of all, what might be a preferrable way to prepare the remaining 20/21g dried mush if I can still eat them. Any ideas? Also, I've read that you can smoke mushrooms too. Are the effects still similar if you do that?

Here's some pics:

I would look into getting a refund. i don't care if they're sold for consumption or not. They shouldn't sell worm/maggot infested product. Of course, maybe a fly layed some eggs on them after you already had them.

Thanks for the replies. I would agree with you about the possibility of a fly laying eggs but I kept the caps in a sealed bag in a desk drawer the whole time I had them. Also, the fact that none of them were moving leads me to believe that they were killed by the drying process or the mushrooms themselves.
I sent the store an e-mail and the guy didn't offer me a refund or anything. Just gave me a line about how it's harvested from the wild so something like that can't be guaranteed against. He also said that it didn't appear to be an inside infestation but I think it's just that they're eyes are not so good.
I was wondering about smoking it though and how much you can/is it better to mix with other stuff? I figured that would be a less repulsive way to still make use of it.

I wouldn't expect much from smoking it...

The flame would most likely deteriorate any psyhoactive content.

Wow. I would never order from that asshat again. I wouldn't eat 'em. I have heard that peole have felt "something" when smoking them but not enough to be worth it. Maybe if you made a tea?

I guess I'll try sending one more e-mail to the company to ask for a refund. If that doesn't work I might try the tea idea. Thanks!

Asking for a refund makes no sense. Amanita muscaria is not a domesticated specie, it only grows in the wild. Therefore, it is subjected to a natural environment, where flies, worms and other insects go around eating and laying eggs.

I use to consume some laughing gyms which i collect from the wild. They usually have worms or other insects around. What can i do, should i complain to the trees, or to the birds for not eating those damn worms and flies ?

You should accept this as a natural consequence. Anyway, worms and maggots, whatever, won't kill you. They are a disgusting source for proteins, no more, no less.

Well, I guess if you put it that way I probably shouldn't bother sending another e-mail to the company. I thought amanitas could be grown in more of like a greenhouse environment too though, no? I don't know. I'm somewhat new to this stuff. Well, I guess I'll try making a tea with what's left then. Hopefully I'll get off on it even though it'll be my first time with tea.

So I guess they do mainly just grow in the wild. I just read somewhere that the fact that amanitas tend to grow around trees makes them difficult to cultivate.
I ended up not bothering to ask for a refund. Instead of making a tea I just grinded the caps up with an herb grinder and then threw them in a blender with a little OJ. Not a bad way to still make use of them I must say. I think I got all the gnat larvae out when I went thru them with the tweezers anyway.
One thing I should mention is that I probably could've used less. I started out with 7g and a couple hours later I blended up another 4. A while after that I noticed some occasional throbbing/pulsing in my hands. Shortly after that my heart started pounding for a while and it seemed like it was beating a little too fast. I ate a whole bunch of doritos and felt better though.
I had read that the panther caps are more potent than a. muscaria and that it's good to start with just a couple caps. What can I say though? Sometimes I'm just dumb like that and don't take advice well. That's something I'll have to work on I guess.
