Oysters on leaf mold
    #5320397 - 02/20/06 03:46 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I'm a newbie gormet grower, about to start my first oyster grow. I live in a city where it isn't convenient to get quantities of straw or agricultural waste. Cardboard is easy to get, and I also have access to large quantities of maple or oak leaf mold.

Has anybody used leaf mold as a substrate for oyster (or other) mushrooms? I know leaf mold, particularly oak, is fairly acidic - what is the ideal pH range for an oyster mushroom substrate?

I have never seen oysters growing on leaf mold. I have seen blewits, shaggy parasols and winecap stropheria growing on leaf mold.

Leaf mold may make a good supplement to add to what you are growing to oysters. I think oysters like close to neutral medium.

Leaf mold is probably fairly close to neutral, oak leaves start out acidic, but once they have become leaf mold they are not.

Straw is one of the best things to grow oysters on.

I think if you grew oysters on cardboard and burried them in leaf mold you would get some pretty good yeilds. I may try this myself.

Thanks for your reply. I may make the trip out of town to get straw, seeing as this will be my first oyster grow and I want to see that the other parts are working before experimenting with the substrate. I'll report if I do anything with leaf mold.
