Re: LC lids that don't leak [Re: krill]

See--this is what I'm wondering.  I use a plastic lid with two drilled holes.  I sandpaper the plastic lid, then apply HTV silicone to both; one is a self-healing injection port, the other is a larger circle that I apply a small circle of tyvek to so it has a filter that allows gas exchange.  If I'm putting an LC jar in the refrigerator, I will either slip a latex glove over the top of the quart jar (it makes a nice seal as the wrist of the glove fits very tight around a quart jar and lid, whether it is normal or wide-mouth).

So, why the hell would an LC jar at, say, 38 degrees F, with a rubber glove over it, contam after a given period of months?

I'm trying to understand this as Stamets talks about having cultures  (granted, in mineral oil) that are several years old.

I guess I don't see why a contam could overtake a mycelium blob that's already established at such a low temperature--I would think that temp would reduce metabolic activity to a very low level and it wouldn't have a chance to fight for nutrients against a big mycelial cloud in the jar.

Clean your fridge with disinfectant, you should be doing this anyway. Latex glove is a good idea.

You WILL find your answer by searching. If that fails (for this question it wont) then make a new thread asking the question. You can PM me if you can't find it also.
