Proxying internet connections:
Tor - The Onion Router, a fairly secure proxying program built around second generation onion routing.
JAP - Java Anon Proxy, a fast proxying program coded in Java that uses high-bandwidth mixes and is compatible with the TOR network. Uses more resources than TOR, but can be considerably faster.
Comparison of proxying services - I2P.net have done a fairly comprehensive guide to many internet anonymity solutions, including some of the more complex and involved, such as FreeNet and i2p itself.
Anonymous E-mail:
Hushmail - Free PGP encrypted e-mail accounts. Premium accounts are available at cost with greater features.
Mixmaster - Mixmaster is an anonymous e-mail remailer, for true e-mail anonymity. It is fairly complex to use - not for beginners!
For internet browsing:
Torpark - a version of Portable Firefox that automatically uses TOR. Clears cached data and other identifying information when the program is closed. Can be installed and run from a USB flash drive.
For Desktop Security:
This is a great article on blocking unwanted adverts and malware attacks using the HOSTS file. It incudes up-to-date host files to download and use, improving the overall security of your computer as you browse the internet.
Clear the Windows paging file on shutdown.
Ccleaner is a freeware program that cleans out potentially sensitive temporary files, including the IE and Firefox cache, and lists of recently accessed files and documents.
This post at techsupportforum.com is a comprehensive walkthrough for cleaning your system of most malware, which can pose a potential security risk.
Ghostwall is a small, free, powerfull and lightweight firewall for Windows.
Avast! 4 Home Edition is a free and easy-to-use anti-virus program with on-access scanning.
Clamwin is a free open-source anti-virus program that uses the Clam Antivirus engine. No on-access scanning.
For File storage:
TrueCrypt is a free, open source program that can encrypt logical disks on-the-fly for secure file storage. Supports many algorithyms, including AES. Can encrypt removable volumes, such as USB flash drives.
7-zip is a free, open source file compression program that supports file and archive structure encryption with AES.
Anonymous Operating Systems:
Anonym.OS is a free, open source OpenBSD live-cd that seeks to automatically anonymise or encrypt all indentifiable user information. Still in Beta.
