colonization in the desert
    #531846 - 01/26/02 09:36 AM (23 years, 26 days ago)

Just started 10 jars PF style(8 days ago). I live in an arid desert in New Mexico and I'm a
bit worried that the dry air will "suck the life" right out of my project. I have decided to
leave the lids on tight without holes in hopes of preserving moisture. Is this a bad idea?
Could this be why I have no mycellia growth after 8 days, or should I contact my vendor
with this problem? I guess my question is: must there be some air exchange(like holes)
for germination to occur? I bet the shrooms bless all you people answering questions
abundantly.

i also live in new mexico and i have had some problems due to drying of substrate but its easy to combat by leavcing your jars in a rubbermade with some form of humidification like just filling a glass with water and putting a fish tank pumpin it

I appreciate the input fuzzysquirrelnuts. I figured I'd add some information in hopes of some answers.
I'm growing in 1prt brf + 2prts vermiculite + about 1.25 prts pond water(verm was pretty fine).
I don't think I have too much water because there is no condensation on the sides, but there
are dropplets on the lid. Seems perfect to me. I'm growing B+ from a syringe. To preserve moisture
I have the lids on really tight, infact probaby airtight. I'd like to know if anyone has had success
with tight lids and no air exchange at all for germination. I've read that once colonization starts
I should release the co the mycellium produce, but what about prior to germination. 8 days now.
I'm starting to freak. oh yeah, 75 to 85 degree fluctuation between day and night.
