Computer effin up, any advice?
    #5318343 - 02/20/06 12:07 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Alright.. I believe my mobo(MSI, can't remember specific model) has crapped out on me, but I'm curious if anyone can give me some advice. I'm on my laptop, which works just fine, the comp that's screwed is my desktop. But anyways, on to the symptoms.

For a while now it seems my memory controller bus has been fucked, as I've got 4 sticks of 512 in there, yet the mobo is only recognizing one of them. I know that they work though, as cpuz sees them all (and they're all brand new).

Now within the past few weeks I've tried to avoid restarting it because like 80% of the time it'll lock up when the windows loading screen comes up. I generally wait 5-10 minutes to see if it'll work, and when it doesn't I restart it. Again and again. Last time this happened, I restarted it at least 5 times, the same thing happening again and again and eventually in my frustration I kicked it, not too hard, but still hard enough, and miracuously it booted up.

Well I've had to restart it again, and as I was doing so MSI updates shit popped up and I just clicked "ok" "ok" so that it would hurry up and restart. Well now I can hear it booting up, the fans going, the harddrives (30 & 80gig WD IDE and 200gig seagate SATA) clicking a bit, but no output on the monitor, at all. Not even the black backlit-ness. In fact the monitor's LED light thing says that it's sleeping. When I unplug the monitor from the vid card (radeon 9600), it turns on and recognizes it's not plugged into an output, and when I plug it back in, it goes back to a sleeping state. I've tried restarting numerous times, but always the same thing. I'm not sure what else to try. Anyone have any suggestions?

sounds like your hdd is dying to me, or your windows is really fucked up, have you tried a reinstall of windows?  When was the last time you had a fresh install?

peace :rasta:

I can't exactly reformat or reinstall windows.. because i can't get a signal to my monitor. And like I said, I know that parts of my mobo have been messing up for the past few months (memory controller bus, onboard sound), and the last thing I did before restarting was update something for the mobo.

I appreciate the suggestion though, especially considering how difficult I made it to decipher what's wrong. And I'll know for sure if it's the mobo or not soon, since I ordered a new one from newegg (which is actually fine with me, I've been due for a new one for a while). Thanks for the suggestion man.
