NewB's First Casing - Contam removed... SAFE TO EAT???
    #5317714 - 02/19/06 08:31 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I had some green stuff on a casing, I assumed it was contaminated.

I separated this casing from the the other casings. I cut the contaminated areas out of the casing.

This was about 5 days ago, this is todays picture and I don't see contamination or green on the casing or the mushrooms....

Are these mushrooms safe to eat???
Or should I just play it safe and throw the whole casing out???

Well since no one has answered you yet, I will give you my noob opinion. If you cut a distance around the contam since the green mold is the mold spores and so more area around it is infected since the mold is invisible, if u cut a distance around it it should be safe so if u did that then u should be good and since no more spores have been seen your probably good. I would eat em but I am a risk taker and get lucky a lot.

My take, if you cant get ride of the contaminates by h202 then it's a lost cause.

By cutting it and removing it you could have spread millions of spores around. There like microscopical mushrooms with a shit loads of spores to release.

As far as the fruit I don't know but there probably good.

Right - I mean, I guess what he's trying to say is that you have to be very generous with the amount of your casing that you remove, which it seems like you were by your pictures. What you didn't do, however, that I would recommend doing next time (if there is a next time) you get a contam, is to remove the patch, then replace it with salt. The salt will kill any of the contam that remains and will stop it from spreading. I noticed that one of the mushrooms is growing right out of the square that you cut out - I would probably throw that away if I were you, since it's small and not worth the risk. The others in the back are all fine in my opinion, though.

Yep.....they are right.  Do NOT eat them.  Pack em up and send them to me and allow ME to kindly dispose of them for you.  Tough job, but someone has to do it.

I wouldn't eat them. As soon as I find something that may cause a prob. I chuck it. Chances are you will not die but it may make you ill wile you are tripin... not such a good idea. And also it looks like you missed some anyway.
Although the cells of the mic will limit the diffusion of chemicals, once inside they may possibly wick them up into your fruits.
Its never worth it to take a chance.
