If you live in a cold dry climate and it is winter time, and you want to dry a small amount of fungus, do you really need to use a desicant or fancy drying method?? I read somewhere that you can dry them simply by leaving them in a dresser drawer between a bunch of newspaper. What do you think? R/H is about 35-40

Yep, it will work. I have done it before....HOWEVER...they will not become completely dry that way.
Either use dissicant or somehow blow warm air over them. Have a space heater?
I am guessing you want to be descreet about it since you mentioned a drawer.
Short answer, go for it. But don't store them for too long or they will get moldy.

DEHYDRATOR works EVERY TIME, fast & effective.
Think of mush/fruits like you would a tomato.
Would a tomato dry out CRACKER DRY, just setting somewhere.
NO & neither will mushrooms.

...but when using a dehydrator, make sure it's on the lowest heat setting.

actually I heard its better to dry without heat when using a dehydrator... either choose that setting or take apart the dehydrator and takeout the heating device... but im just a noob (runs away)

I agree 110 percent with Agar. As a matter of fact, I'm running the dehydrator (same brand and model as Agar's exactly) as we speak. My Grandmother found it at a garage sale for $5! For best results, start drying at 95F (lowest setting) for at least 2-3 hours (3 for large load). Then at 125F (medium low setting) for an additional 3-5 hours. You want to make sure that stems aren't bendy or soft, but stiff and cracker dry. Caps dry out quicker than stems. Right now my batch is dry except for a lone monster still in the dryer. Here are today's pics: Here they are right after picking: Here is the lone monster in the dryer:
And here is the finished product, all done in about five hours.

For preservation a good method for removing residual moisture after air drying: Go buy some epsom salt ( MgSO4 7H2O ), Put it in a non-stick pan and heat over med flame on stove. The water will be liberated from the salt leaving an anhydrous salt. slowly over time the salt will draw moisture from the air by incorperating the water into the hydrated salt crystal.

There is also a method regarding using uncooked rice with a paper towel covering them, and then placing the fungi on top and into the refridgerator. Do a search on drying methods on this site, I'm always seeing posts and info on drying methods. But like I said before, contrary to what some may say, proper dehydration perserves 98 percent of the psilocybin, and Psilocin giving you the best performance. Results may vary naturally.

Ever notice at some reteraunts that they add grains of rice to their salt shakers so the salt doesn't clump. Sounds like a good plan...

Untill my freind got a dehydrator he used this every time, and they were usually dry in a day or 2. He would always break up large caps and stems to ensure even drying. From what he says the potency loss is small!
