Easy Poo Pasturization

OK, this is another idea that I didn't think of myself, so I won't take credit for it. I've heard about this a couple of times before and I just wanted to do a little pictorial on it. If anyone knows who came up with the idea, let me know and I'll give them the credit.
So here goes:
Supplies Needed: - Horse Poo - Styrofoam Cooler - Large Pot of Water - Thermometer (cooking kind) - Pillowcase - Weight (to hold down poo)
Step 1: Gather up your horse poo, pillowcase, weight & styrofoam cooler. Place your poo into the pillowcase and tie the top in a loose knot.

Step 2: Place the pillowcase on the bottom of the cooler and place your weight or anything else that's heavy and can get wet on top of the pillowcase to hold it down.

Step 3: Now you want to get a large pot of water heated up to pasturizing temps. Make sure you are using enough water to submerse the pillowcase completely. I use a cheap thermometer used for cooking(supermarket) to monitor the water temperature. I try to get the water in the 170-180F area.
*Important* 180F is the absolute highest you want to go, so if it goes above this, let it cool back down below the 180 mark before proceeding.

Step 4: Pour the steaming water into the cooler until the pillowcase is completely submerged and place the lid on the cooler. If you skipped the second part of step 2, you will now have a floating pillowcase full of poo and will burn your hands trying to push it below the water, Owwwww!
If you see any steam escaping from underneath the lid, you may want to place something heavy on the lid to keep it on snug.

Now you just wait for an hour. The water temperature will drop while in the cooler, but should stay within pasturization temps for hours. This is after an hour in my cooler:
The temp only dropped 10 degrees in that time.
Once the hour is up, take the pillowcase out (careful, it's still hot!) and let it drain in the sink. Once it's cooled down, squeeze out the excess water and add your spawn to it. I didn't take any pics of this part because a buddy had to borrow my camera at the time, but you get the idea.
You can use a regular cooler for this also and it would probably work better for insulating the heat. This method accomplishes pasturization without the "earthy" smell that some of us can't stand and also doesn't require constant monitoring of pasturization temps like some other methods.

I'm an easy kind of guy!
Like I said, I didn't come up with this, I just made a pictorial to make it easier for noobs to understand. It seems like without pictures, some people just don't get it.

Interesting, I have access to hpoo but I am not up to cooking the shit my self, and I would have to do it when the misses was not home, she would flip on that, it was hard enough to convince her to let the TennHpoo in the refrigerator..lol
My other choice ways to fire up the grill, I have a propane with a side burner...
But this tek I will have to keep in mind, I can work with this.
Nice write up,

My wife is the reason I started doing this She is no fan of the smell and doesn't exactly share my enthusiasm with the hobby.
You will only smell it when you open the cooler at the end. You can do this easily outdoors without arousing any suspicion. You can do bulk amounts with a larger cooler and a couple pillowcases.

Couldn't you do the same in a pc? Just get the temp to 170 and shut the heat off and put the pillow case in and place the lid on tight? Don't you think it would keep the heat in just the same? The reason I ask is I am about to pasturize my compost and I have no cooler and no way to get one at the moment!

Metal heats up really fast, but also cools down fast also. I've never tried that, but it could work. I would do a test run without poo and check the temps every hour or so.

Also, I would get the temp up to 180, not 170 because of the rapid cool down.

Perhaps I do not understand your question well enough, but are you asking if you can put the water in a pressure cooker, heat it to a certain temperature, open the pressure cooker, place the pillow case in, and put the lid on tight?
Or are you simply asking if you could heat the water in a pan to that temperature, and use your pressure cooker as a substitute for the stryofoam container?
I sure as hell hope it wasn't the former.
 Peace.

So this also hydrates the horse poo? Once the excess water is squeezed out it's at optimum saturation? I'm just assuming you have dry poo in the pillowcase. Awesome info, I just got some poo and I look forward to using it!

I get my poo to field capacity. Only a couple drops of water should come out when gently squeezed.

Excuse me but what reason would one have to buy unpasteurized to pre? Sorry for going off topic but what would be a good ratio of verm+ coco to poo? Like 10llbs poo + 2llbs coco+verm?

Don't mean to hijack your thread foo, just helpin out the new guys.
Here's another method that cost me an initial investment of about 50 bucks give or take a few.
I can pasteurize about 8 oven bags worth of substrate in an hour's time.
Right Here

Nice call Foo 5 shrooms 4 u

Some side notes. If you use a laundry bag made for the washer instead of a pillowcase, water drains thru nice. And you can hang it from a bungee or rope. Dollar store
If you use a reg cooler instead of foam, take it outside, pop the drain, no stinky around u. No dust in the cooler.
Bring the water to boil and back down to 170.
If you can keep the cooler clean inside, just dump the poo back in there for mixing n stuff.
Pasturized poo, o yeah!

That method is definitely a cool one
I don't see too much of a difference in the results though, besides $$. Using that same cooler, you could just heat your water up to pasturizing temps and dump it in there and wait. Then you wouldn't have to drill holes in it to vent the steam.

You don't need to mix in coir or verm. Straight poo works fine. You can stretch the poo and add some "fluff" with coir. Verm will help hold moisture, but both verm and coir aren't really necessary IMO.

Great tek Foo. My Coleman cooler is all I ever use anymore. No, the poo doesn't smell up a room if pasteurized in an airtight cooler. Of course I don't think that properly aged/leeched poo smells "bad" when pasteurized on a stove, it just has a very "earthy" smell. A plastic cooler with a drain plug makes it very easy to drain water off after pasteurization as well.
