Using pH paper.
    #5316567 - 02/19/06 02:10 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I bought some pH paper from SCIPLUS.

I have never checked pH of casing etc before always done it by guesswork and done amazingly well. But since I was ordering some other stuff and these seemed reasonably priced I picked them up.

My question is. I barely remember HS science class, how long do I have to leave the paper exposed to get an accurate reading. And to test casing do I mix it with pH neutral water and then dip the strip in there? Also look at the WWW page PH & Litmus Would Litmus paper also be useful? Thanks for your help in advance.

I dare you try and browse that entire site, it takes a while. They have some really cool kits you could put together with your kids if you have any too.

pH paper strips typically change instantaneously. Your method sounds good, just mix it well; also use as pure water as possible. Tap water will probably work fine. Or maybe just squeeze a drop from the casing material onto the paper strip.

You can buy an aquarium PH test kit at any superstore (walmart, fred meyer, target, etc)... It's not paper usually, but it's drops, so you can squeeze water out of a handful of casing, and add the drops, it'll change color just like litmus paper
