Eating mycelium cakes?

I have read on here that eating mycelium cakes can make you trip. IIsupport this as I think the information on this site is usually tried and tested...my question though..can you eat a cake that does not have visible signs of contamination and get sick from spores etc.. that could be present?
Also..someone I know who is a "student in Chemistry" said that fungus and the shrooms in general are a toxin and it can make you sick or give you food poisoning. He explained that the trip and the effects that you get from shrooms are a "food poisoning" like a reaction from the "toxins". Supporting himself he added that you dont know the potency of the mycelium. I dont really support what he said, butI am unexperienced in this anywas so I was interested what everyone here thought on this.

I know that you can eat cakes but i don't have any details. Mushrooms are probably hallucinogenic as a self defense mechanism. Imagine how freaked out an animal would get after chowing down on a patch of shrooms. Of course Siberian reindeer like Amanitas. Ok enough ranting.

OR.... the inverse is true. Animals eat the shrooms, have a good time and continue to seek them out, thus spreading the spores! Michael Pollan would say that the fungi are using us even more than we're using them, but we're too homo-centric to think about it that way.

Sure you can eat all the cakes you want. But you arent going to trip. The only psilocybin in the mycelium is in the knots and thats it. Also, the actives in mushrooms arent toxins at all. Who the fuck trips when they get food poisoning?

Six of the eight alkaloids present in the chemical structure of the psilocybin mushroom are toxic (the two other are psilocybin and psilocin)
and i think might be referring to bacterial-food poison Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Clostridium perfringens, Campylobacter, Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Bacillus cereus

Thank you for your input. In regards to "we talked one of our dumshit drunk friends into eating a cake and all he got was a nasty taste in his mouth for his efforts"
I have heard of people eating the myc cakes themselves and tripping very good. I heard it on the shroomery forums as well.

YES! It does work.
Don't eat PF style cakes!!!! The verm is not good for you. It tastes bad. It takes a lot. You will have the "glitter-shits" for a few days.
If your going to eat cakes grow on pasta ( search for- rotini and mushrooms) Boil,Grow and top with your favorite sause.
