stuff with low sunflower content, if possible. cubensis isn't fond of sunflower seeds (usually), but if your growing shiitake, the sunflower can help.

Some stores sell just straight millet, which works very well - Millet is found in the bags of mixed birdseed too, but you don't have to bother with the sunflower seed problem if you can find it sold seperately.

HAHA I love this controversy, I too thought that but the 'old hands' don't mess with it, well at least some.....
I personally don't know and did painstakingly remove them,
I just remove the bulk of them...

So long as the SFS content is not higher than about 3%, I don't remove any.
If for some reason, there is a butt load in a mix. I simply scoop out most of the floaters. But, don't go to the trouble to remove all.

SFS's add lignum & some oils. Which is not a bad thing. So long as it is kept to a low percentage.

Unless there's a ton of sunflower seeds, you can just leave them in. The mycelium will colonize them just like any other seed. I've never bothered to remove sunflower seeds or "floaters" and haven't had problems. It seems like an extra, unnecessary, step to me.
WBS is every where. Garden centers, home improvement warehouses, target, walmart, petsmart. Petsmart sells 40lb bags of "Bird Basics" for 6 bucks. Doesn't make sense to buy a small bag unless you really don't have any where to store the extra seed.

You don't have to remove the sunflower seeds. When I first got into cultivating, everywhere I looked and everyone I talked to[well, almost everyone], said that they needed to be removed because they harbour contams, but, that isn't entirely true-as a matter of fact, that is false[If you use a Pressure Cooker to sterilize your WBS-NO CONTAM CAN SURVIVE--or they shouldn't survive that is, lol.]. I have grown mushrooms entirely on Black Sunflower seeds with no problems at all, except that, it took a little longer for my jars to colonize and the fruits were small and scarce[Very few fruited]. Sunflower seeds are removed, because, "Newbies" may see them when their jars are colonizing and mistake them for a contam. Just remove what floats on top and you will be fine.
Just my two pennies on the subject

That's cool bro. Don't forget to shake them when they get about 20% colonized to redistribute the mycelium again.
