LACK of cleanliness in our hobby.....

I'd like to hear from a few people here about your LACK of cleanliness in preparing jars and whatnot.
Tell me your worst case scenerio including the results.
The reason I ask is I just laughed at myself.....I walked in to my clean room and it smellls EXACTLY like a hospital. Hell, I even wiped my PC with 71% isopopyl before taking it through the door. I also sprayed the outside of the spore syringe bag with lysol before taking it in to the room.
Am I just a freak, or not?

Wow, I wish I could afford a clean room. I must settle for a clean kitchen and a homemade glove box, and I have housemates so basically keep the nature of my shroomery to myself, in the closet.

I dont clean my room at all before I knock up jars. I simply wipe down my glovebox with bleach and alcohol, then spray my pc'd jars with the 10% bleach once there in the box. Works fine for me.
There is a big difference between being clean and being sterile tho. There is no need to have an entire room rubbed down with alcohol if your not going to be doing open air transfers or injections.

I wipe down everything that enters my cleanroom. I have about a .2% contam rate over the last 20yrs.

When dealing with spawn and cultures, one can never be too sterile. Nobody posting above is going beyond the call of duty. It must be recognized however, before we burn ourselves out trying to keep EVERYTHING sterile, there is no need to be sterile in the actual growing environment. Once your substrate is fully colonized, ordinary room air won't hurt a thing. I chuckle when I see polyfil on the vents in a terrarium for example. RR

I put ployfil over my vents so to slow air exchange or else my RH would drop.

I chuckle when I hear peoples casings are contaminating with trich. I always try to do my best keeping everything as clean as possible but I don't go overboard I know what it takes. Learning sterile culture technique also means practicing cleanliness even in your everyday chores in otherwords making it not only a habit but second nature. Of course I'm only referring to serious growers. Much respects RR

Don't take my procedures as recomendations, I'm posting simply because I'm probably one of the more DIRTY growers.
There's stuff I do that is essential, and a lot of stuff I don't do. When innoculating, I flame my needle, and keep it wrapped in an alcohol soaked paper towel. Once removed from the towel, it spends about 1 second in the open air before being plunged into the jar. I use injection ports made from RTV sealant. I wipe my injection point down with alcohol before inserting the needle. I wash my hands.
That's all I do. My jars cool down in the kitchen with dirty plates. I don't wipe anything down, spray the air, or wear a mask. I inoculate them on the counter with the AC on, and sometimes with food cooking on the stove. Since I started using the injection ports, my contam rate has been 2% (1 jar) and that was due to wet tyvek during incubation.
I get away with this because the sterile environment in the jars and syringe never comes into contact with the outside air. For me it's worth it to spend 5 minutes making 12 inoculation ports, so that I can avoid the work in creating a sterile environment. I use ports on my LCs as well.
If I ever get into agar, I'll have to change my ways, but that's how I do jar inoculation. Again, I'm sloppy and take my chances, but there is something to be said for pushing the limits. Getting contams can be viewed as an excellent learning experience, just be safe about handling them.

I fill my jars on the counter in the hallway, and I inject over my desk in a carpeted room after wipping the counter with bleach solution and spreaying that solution above the desk. I have had no contams other than all the EQs that came contam in the needle, I got a prompt replacement tho. However, I've only done 24 qt jars so far.

I wash my hands, take a shower, runa hepa in the grow room, thats it, I'll get a contaminated casing after like 4 flushes, but by them i dont care, I really feel like I should work harder on being clean, but I really dont have a problem. for example, When casing, I wash my hands every 5 casings, no problems, cuts down on the work...

Everyone growing should use the universal precaution procedures, forgot what they are, but its pretty much the cleanier the better, less risker or worrysome with precautions.... i mean hell one time i without watching my hands picked out a mycelium cake from one jar and planted it into a jar that was not cleaned out and still smelled of tabasco pepper jelly(mmmmmmm ) This was a long time ago, and was very irresponsible, i mean the odds were against me. Im just saying yeah, its possible you could do it without bringing everything you come in contact with in quaritine, but the safer the better. peace and good luck/.

You're kidding right? That's a bit over the top if you ask me, but hey, if you've got the means to do it, more power to you.

I don't do anything.
I work in a dusty, nasty, stuffy, moldy basement.
I dont' take a shower before I work, I don't wash down any surfaces...
The only sterility I have is using a gauze pad soaked in isopropyl and wrapping that around the syringe needle when I inoculate.
Actually, I also spray some lysol or something when I am making a casing .
