Hi,
I've been using the PF tek for the past... year. I'm looking into using the grain tek. I am unable to get a hold of rye so I was thinking of using birdseed. But the problem is... when I went to the store, there's like 10 different kinds of birdseed to choose from with different seeds and grains. What do ppl recommend? If anyone has an idea of how to get a hold of some rye without ordering online, please let me know. I was thinking about going to the local home brewing place, but I'm guessing it would be kinda weird 'cause I would look like the last person to be brewing my own beer.
Thanx
If you plan on pm, please pm to girlskater

Try a health food store. Buy only organic. "Wild Oats" "GNC" "Hi-Health" ect. ect. Expect about 59 cents a pound for rye berries (the best grain to use)

This doesn't belong in Advanced Mushroom Cultivation.....but.
Do you have a Feed store near you ?
They have Rye for like 48 cents a pound.
And they carry syringes and needles too.

It doesn't have to be organic, i never ever buy organic, cuz it's way over priced. And most feed stores around here get about $.08 per pound, or about $7 per 50 lbs.

I use the cheap stuff, cheapest you can find. Something like $4 for a 20 pound bag. What you want is mostly millet (the little pale roundish seeds) but a few other seeds don't hurt (maybe its good). The cheap stuff is always mostly millet, since thats the cheapest seed available. Ignore the few sunflower seeds, some people pick them out mistakenly believing that they promote contamination. The truth is that the dark sunflower seeds just show molds easier and the hulls are the preferred food for green molds (they like woody material). But molds are easily killed and have no resistance to high heat (unlike bacterial endospores) so if you see mold on the sunflower seeds, you let it get in somehow after sterilization. Removing the sunflower seeds won't save you, it will just take a few days longer for you to notice the problem.

If you're trying to maximize nutrients per jar, taking the sunflower seeds out helps. They take up space, are about 50% shell(which is good, but isn't loaded with nutrients), and sometimes allow pockets of voids to form. On the other hand, it's a bitch to take them out. However, if you buy the brands that don't have sunflower seeds in them, then you need not sift.
