Different Smells....
    #5312910 - 02/18/06 08:44 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Everyone knows the smell of success! it's a good smell, the kinda earthy Mycellium smell that doesn't usually change.

well in the past 3 months i have smelled more smells then i can count some that smell like a rotten apple, and some that smell like my uncle's basebent. but for some reason i can't get any of my jars to smell like healthy mycellium.

when grains colonize... they are sopposed to be hard, whith nice healthy rhizomorphic strands comming all around it, and will break up easily into individual kernels.

My grains have been soft, and colonized... smell like my uncle's basement, and have been sticky and clumpy. They do not break up well.

seriously i have tried every method in the book. Grains just don't like me!  :banghead:

what's the reasoning behind them being soft?

I know that if you cook (simmer) them too long then they will burst and then stick together.

Also if you don't allow them to drain enough they will be too wet and this also will cause them to stick together and be soft, and not colonize very well. If you allow it to drain enough the outside of the grain will dry, but the inside will stay moist and expanded. Too long and of course the grain dries out.

For instance I use CC and when I first started I only allowed them to drain for about an hour. They stuck together, clumped, and didn't colonize very well. Some of the grains rotted over time in the jars and I think that might be what is happening to you.

Then I tried letting the CC drain overnight and it was like night and day. No more clumping, easy to shake, and colonized extremely fast.

Hopefully that helps.

I drained a little differently though....I put the strainer in a pot and covered the pot so that the grains didnt air dry. They just drained.

sounds interesting... steep/simmering stops the germenation process correct?

you seeds did not germenate inside the pot did they?

I thought germinating was good? I thought you soak overnight to allow endospores to germinate so you can kill them in the PC.

I know in Magash's Rye tek your supposed to soak them overnight then simmer and allow to drain, but he only drains for a few minutes. I really don't enough experience with OTHER grains to know if they would sprout during the draining process. This doesn't seem to be something that would happen to CC.

Which grains are you trying to use?

if my jars come out clumpy after draining and pc'ing i just let them sit untouched for 2-3 days and then give them a good shake. Works like a charm for me.

cool... thanks coda.

JustK: i didn't mean germenating of endospores. Actually germenating of Grains, ie.) Rye, WBS

My roommie decied to go apeshit on my rye a couple weeks ago, and filled half or over with rye, and they swelled, and sucked up moisture...leaving some on top Unsubmerged.

these unsubmerged grains sprouted, and germenated. making the grain useless. BASTARD! wasted like 20 lbs of grain

(YOU HEAR ME, I HOPE YOUR READING THIS!!! BASTARD)

** also, what i was going to get to. was that I opened some jar lids last night, of basement smelling Mycellium,

and the tip top of the ring had a kinda slime to it... but the whole jar doesn't look like it has been infected with a slime mold. only the tops of all the jars.

wierd thing is... the bottoms are not colonizing. There is something seriously wrong. I cased them, we'll see if i receive some growth.
