even one time may be enough to make you seriously ill... unless they are properly prepared.. here is official instructions from Finland.. for Finnish gyromitras.. notice that the toxicity of false morels may differ around the globe..

They are "semicultivated" here in Finland.. the taste is very good.. IMO..

I could get a culture if you're still interested in about six weeks. It still needs to warm up a bit for them to come out here. RR

One should also be aware of that even if you prepare them like that, they still contain some gyromitrin. It may not be enough to cause illness, but it is likely toxic to the reproduction system and carcinogenic, or at least have been shown to be so in animal testing. I don't know if this is relevant if you only eat them a few times per year, but it is still good to know.
There is a good page about it (in swedish) here, with references: http://www.slv.se/templates/SLV_Page____10675.aspx

I think they're cool to look at, but I'd never eat one. There's too many good mushrooms out there. RR

oh yes, it's good to know.. after you have eaten that tasty meal..
I still have similar doubts about testing amanitas as food.. http://www.williamrubel.com/Mushrooms/muscaria.html
seriously, better to be safe than sorry..
a tip to Roger: fortunately one doesn't have to swallow to taste the food..

About "cultivation" of False Morel (in swedish )
Quote:
Stenmurkla
Stenmurklan (Gyromitra esculenta) ?r en av v?ra mest efters?kta men ocks? giftigaste matsvampar.
<-- snip -->
"Odling"
<-- snip -->
Toppmurkla
