pressure cookers and sterilization
    #531128 - 01/25/02 03:11 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

are pressure cookers essentially just pots with better seals that you put on the oven, or are they things that you plug into a wall and dont need a hotplate for?

I'm in a situation where I'm unable to use a hotplate for cooking, but need a way of sterilizing jars. PC seemed obvious, except that I dont if they plug in or sit on a hotplate. Any other ideas very welcome too =)

I think that you're stuck. Pressure cookers work the same way as a boiling pot of water does, except, it has a much better seal in which it allows pressure and higher tempuratures. There are things, sterilizers/autoclaves, that plug in to sterilize. They act, for the most part, like a pressure cooker without the need of a hotplate etc. I've heard of microwave sterilization success, but unfortuantly, I cant point you towards any teks. Also, sterilization in the oven will not work because it is dry heat.

I really dont know what to suggest here.

use wax paper instead of foil on your jars and nuke it for 3 mins. believe me, its sterile.

You can use an oven with autoclave bags. The microwave will also work. Just search. But to be brutally honest with you, you need a pc. In all likelihood you will fail as a beginner without a pc. You can of course boil jars in a pot with success, but without a burner you are SOL with that too. If you are serious about your new hobby, find a way to get a burner to use. Also try the Search for Faq's.

in the dorms i'm in we're not allowed to use hotplates

of course, I just realized the irony of this because it's not as though I'd be allowed to grow drugs either =p
