Higher CO2
    #531118 - 01/25/02 02:56 PM (23 years, 27 days ago)

Ive heard fanning 3-5 times a day is best to lower the rate of abhorts. However Ive heard as well that keeping the humidity high as well will lower the rate of them.

It seems to me that by removing the lid from your terrarium, and fanning would decrease the humidity as well as increase the chances of contamination. Is there any other ways of good gas exchange without removing the lid ?

Thanks ...

although you'd increase the risk of spores entering the terrarium, there's a low chance that they'll germinate unless the air is stagnant(high CO2 triggers the growth of many lower fungi), the mycelium is weakened from either fruiting or other contams, or there's a food source high in nutrients and is not colonized by the mycelium. If you case a substrate and that casing is colonized, you don't really have to worry unless you don't get good air circulation.

Thanks,

But, what other ways are there to make good air circulation? I might not be able to be home enough to give it a fanning that many times a day!

Either get a aquarium air pump and an air stone....then stick it into a jar of water.
Or get a cool mist humdifier.
Either of these will give you better air circulation.
You can also cut a hole into the side of the chamber and cover it with a filter patch
or a filter disk.
U can also hook up a computer fan.
Do a search for these for further info.
