Anyone here from California?
#5310698 - 02/17/06 02:37 PM (17 years, 11 months ago) |

Well, I am getting flown out for an interview for my dream job. I'll start at 60k if I get it, and after 3 years 150k, and after 6 years 300k. And that is guaranteed. So, I was wondering if anyone here lived there, and could tell me whether or not 80k is enough for a couple to live off in California. We'd be moving to long beach.

I think you could manage off that, though it wouldn't take you as far as the same amount of money in another state. You might have to live in an apartment.

I don't know, try going into the suburbs. POL is a bitch out their. My uncle lives out their and makes around 150 k a year and his house cost 2x or even 3x the price of my parents house, which is probably twice as big.
Good luck on your job.

80k is enough of an income, but it's lower middle class here.
The combined income of my parents is 70k, and they're always having to worry about making ends meet.

80k for 2 people might be a little rough. That's what I make and i'm single right now. Just be careful with your money and you will be fine.

It's been proposed that the minimum wage be raised, but it has to be voted into effect. And even if they did raise it, it would be over the course of 2 years, not immediately.

but still, they finnally realized 6.75 is totally not enough money.

True, but by 2 years from now I would hopefully have moved on to a job that pays better than minimum wage, so it's too late for me to benefit.

It is impossible to live here on min wage. Anything under $13.00 a hour is a struggle. It's worth it though I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Dood 80k a year is definetly possible. Especially if you mvoe to the suburbs. In long beach there is a lot of area to live on that and still be rather comfortable.

eheheahaha!!
i guess it depends on where you go... ive been downtown long beach at around midnight and 1am. first time cause i got lost on a midnight drive, another time i forget how i ened up there... lol. but it was not the place to go at night.
during the day i went cuase they got a nice aquarium thingy, pretty big, but even in the day downtown was not the best of places... lol (im so glad i chose my community college and not the lb community college...)
but suburbs is probably a different story so dont worry
and yea yesterday i logged off at seven, then actually stayd awake another hour. and the nslept for 12 hours... hehe, i didnt go to bed thursday night, and then friday morning i went surfing... so i was pretty pooped

I definitely would avoid the city, and live in the suburbs, but if it's cheaper to live in the suburbs, why wouldn't it be more crappy? Or is it more expensive to live in the suburbs?

i doubt it its just most poor people cant go all out and buy a house or whatever, so they are stuck with high rent cause they can only pay monthly or whatever.. (did i make any sense?? i knwo what im sayin but have troubles explaining sometimes..) although the houses that were right next to downtown werent so nice, but i guess that would still be considered "in the city" sicne its so close (california cities man... for real...)
so yea, suburbs are cool

and i mean, don't rely on the 'suburbs are fine' thing either...
'downtown' l.a. and long beach are more or less just skid row, lots of homeless trash, alcoholics, purse snatchers, etc... the real gangstas and the real crime takes place in the 'suburbs' (minus south central)
compton is a 'suburb' watts is a 'suburb' christ, i live in a 'suburb' and i hear gun shots at least once a week, i can get any drug i want if i walk 2 blocks, particularly crack and tar
you really just need to scope the area and get a feel for it and judge whether or not you would be able to handle living there.

most of those suburbs should be obvious though the moment you step into one ort even near one... those are the suburbs where every car has a flat tire, there are blacks hangin on the curb everywhere (mexican hoods are alright), loud bass but you dont know where its coming from, junkies stumbling across the street, shoes hangin from electricity/phone lines... etc etc. i wouldnt call those suburbs... lol, i call em "hoodz"
maybe its just where youre at man, but those arent very common where im at... go a lil south of lbc and it should all be daisy

In the Bay Area you can live in an apartment, make 24K a year being that you don't get taxed much in that income bracket and live. I mean you have a cheap studio or apartment and aren't living in SF but your living fine. You can rent a room in a 4-5 bedroom house in the Bay Area for only $500 and live with other professional business people that work 9-5. That is even cheaper then a studio apartment or a duplex. My friends have cute 2 bedroom duplex for $1,200 a month. Man if your rent is $500, you need $300 a month for food, $200 for transportation, and then $150 for cable and internet that is only $1,150 a month that you need. That is only $13,800 you need after taxes. Granted some people live in a nice apartment that costs $1,400 a month but that is your choice to waste money and not shop around for a cool place that is older, cute and groovy. My place is $850 a month and is a huge older apartment. Everyone else that lives in this converted house/apartments pays highest $1,000 to the lowest of $700. An apartment for $700, that is dirt in the Bay man.

If there was such a thing as street knowledge IQ, I'd be about a zero. Seriously. I grew up in a very wealthy area, and within 2 days from moving out, I was robbed for lots of money, had everything I owned stolen, had a friend kidnapped, and it just fucking sucked.
