Coconut fibre. Coco coir. Coconut pith.

It comes in bricks at garden stores or hydroponic stores. It comes in compressed bricks. Be careful not to get too big of a brick. I got the smallest one at a local nursery. It expanded to 1/3 cubic foot according to pakaging, it seems like closer to a cubic foot. After hydrating it now takes up my largest pot.

coco fiber is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy different than vermiculite in my opinion
i dont think coco is a good substitute for BRF in the classic PF-Tek recipe. In other words, I don't think it would work.

I talked to someone that owns a greenhouse, the price on vermiculite is increasing (like everything else!) I had a hard time finding it around here too about a month ago.Its now in plentiful supply, but a bit more expensive than last year.
I would think that if you waited a while you should be able to find some. I've always wondered if corncob bedding would work??Seems like it would help to keep the brf loose and airy.

I don't use it anymore, but I've been up to my ass in vermiculite lately. . .they're using it for packing material, like styrofoam peanuts.  Might want to look along those avenues if all else fails and you still want asbest. . ..oops, I mean vermiculite.
