Sclerotia

I was just wondering what sclerotia is. I've inquired about "philosopher's stones" before and someone told me that those are just sclerotia. But on this one site I read that they're a big clump of mycelium. Can someone clear that up for me?

sclerotia is compressed mycelium. So is a mushroom fruitbody. The difference is that sclerotia do not produce spores, and look like a marshmallow or something. Sclerotia is 70% water whereas a fruitbody is 92% water.

yes, you can and will trip off of sclerotia.

it is the mushrooms response to unfavorable environments which dont allow fruiting. Sclerotia form to resist the elements in order to fruit at a later time.
