To answer this thread i pulled out my copy of Robert Hunters Box of Rain. I figured I thumb through it till I found a lyric that ment alot to me. Wasn't long till I realized every fucking word in that book had a very deep meaning to me.
Inspiration, move me brightly Light the song with sense and color hold away despair More than this I will not ask faced with history's dark and vast statements just seem vain at last some rise some fall some climb to get to terrapin!!

And
"Hello baby, I'm gone, goodbye Half a cup of rock and rye Farewell to you old southern sky I'm on my way - on my way"
as it goes into the solo it makes me rock out so hard I have to punch myself in the face everytime I hear it.

that whole song is sooo F'in sweet
"Comes a Time" Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia Copyright Ice Nine Publishing;
Comes a time when the blind man takes your hand says: don't you see? got to make it somehow on the dreams you still believe Don't give it up you've got an empty cup only love can fill only love can fill
Been walking all morning Went walking all night I can't see much difference between the dark and the light And I feel the wind And I taste the rain Never in my mind to cause so much pain
Comes a time when the blind man takes your hand says: don't you see? got to make it somehow on the dreams you still believe Don't give it up you've got an empty cup only love can fill only love can fill
From day to day just letting it ride you get so far away from how it feels inside You can't let go cause you're afraid to fall till the day may come when you can't feel at all
Comes a time when the blind man takes your hand says: don't you see? got to make it somehow on the things you still believe Don't give it up you've got an empty cup only love can fill only love can fill
[The following verse was sung in performance at least once, according to Brett Heisler, at the Harding Theater on 11/7/71:]
When the words come out like an angry stream You hear yourself say things you could never mean [original line is: When you cool down you find your mind] sung as When the heat goes down and you find your mind] You got a lot of words you've got to stand behind.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Comes a Time" Hunter has posted the manuscript of an early draft of the song in his archives. Recorded on
Reflections Hundred Year Hall First performance: October 19, 1971, at Northrop Auditorium, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota. "Comes a Time" appeared in the first set, following the first ever "Mexicali Blues," and preceding "Playing In the Band." Other firsts in the show, which was Keith Godchaux's first, were "Tennessee Jed," "Jack Straw," "One More Saturday Night," and "Ramble On Rose." The song never made it into a permanent rotation, but reappeared periodically over the years.

You Bastard!!
How the hell am I supposed to pick one, and I am not going to be like ripple and post a bunch. Although, I know its sooo tempting. But I will post one that sums up the feelings I am having at the moment and hasn't been posted yet.
"Tell me the cost I can pay Let me go Tell me love is not lost Sell everything Without love, day to day, insanity is king"
Its from Help on the Way. There is a long Story behind it but my girlfriend has been IP at a psych hospital for an Eating Disorder, she'll be there probably another six or so, and its hard. I love her to no end, and the ED takes away the person I've been feeling like a stranger, and well no love.
The next verse kinda sums up this feeling
I will pay day by day anyway Lock, bolt and key Crippled but free I was blind all the time I was learning to see
We are taking a break, and I have felt insane lately but I'm settling down, and coming to my senses. I think she needs to just take her time, and get healthy and when she comes back home to the apartment and than maybe I can sing the next verse:
Help on the way I know only this I've got you today Don't fly away 'cause I love what I love and I want it that way
AH hell, I posted more than one verse would you look at that. Damn! Forgive me, some of dead songs can just take on my life and give me hope where there wasn't any before. I related simular feelings I have in terrapin station about a week ago!
Also, my sig has one of my favorite dead lyrics: especialy for those acid filled days! <3
-------------------- Calico Kahlia come tell me the news Calamity's waiting for a way to get to her Rosy red and electric blue I bought you a paddle for your paper canoe Say you'll come back when you can Whenever your airplane happens to land Maybe I'll be back here too It all depends on what's with you

God help the child who rings that bell It may have one good ring left, you can't tell One watch by night, one watch by day If you get confused just listen to the music play

Paradise waits on the crest of a wave her angels in flame She has no pain Like a child, she is pure She is not to blame
Poised for flight Wings spread bright Spring from night into the sun Don't stop to run She can fly like a lie She cannot be outdone
Tell me the cost I can pay Let me go Tell me love is not lost Sell everything Without love, day to day, insanity is king
I will pay day by day anyway Lock, bolt and key Crippled but free I was blind all the time I was learning to see
Help on the way I know only this I've got you today Don't fly away 'cause I love what I love and I want it that way
I will stay one more day Like I say Honey, it's you Without love in the dream It will never come true

Arabian wind, The needle's eye is thin, The ships of state sail on mirage, And drown in sand, Out in no-man's land where Allah does command.
What good is spilling blood? It will not grow a thing; Taste eternity the swords sing: Blues of Allah In 'sh'Allah.
They lie where they fall, There's nothing more to say, The desert stars are bright tonight lets meet as friends, The Flower of Islam, The Fruit of Abraham.
The thousand stories have come round to one again, Arabian night, Our Gods pursue their fight, What fatal flowers of darkness spring from seeds of light.
Bird of paradise fly in white sky, Blues for Allah In 'sh'Allah, Let's see with our heart, These things our eyes have seen, And know the truth must still lie somewhere in between.
Under eternity, under eternity, under eternity blue, Bird of paradise fly in white sky, Blues for Allah In 'sh'Allah.
Blues for Allah---check the version from "One from the Vault" amazing stuff!!

Julie catch a rabbit by his tail Come back steppin' like to walk on air Get back home where you belong And don't you run off no more.
Don't hang your head, let the two time roll Grass shack nailed to a pine wood floor Ask the time baby I don't know Come back later, gonna let it show.
I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know, Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row.
Here's a half dollar if you dare Double twist when you hit the air, Look at Julie down below, The levee doin' the do-pas-o.
I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row.
Broken heart don't feel so bad, You ain't got half of what you thought you had. Rock you baby to and fro Not too fast and not too slow.
I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know, Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row.
That's the way it's been in town, Ever since they tore the jukebox down. Two bit piece don't buy no more, Not so much as it done before.
I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there I don't know Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row.

Pride of Cucamonga is a great one! Out on the edge of the empty highway Howling at the blood on the moon Big diesel Mack rolling down my way Can't hit that border too soon
Running hard out of Muskrat Flats It was sixty days or double life Hail at my back like a shotgun blast High wind chimes in the night
Oh, oh, pride of Cucamonga Oh, oh, bitter olives in the sun Oh, oh, I had me some loving And I done some time
Since I came down from Oregon There's a lesson or two I've learned By standing in the road alone Standing watching the fires burn
The northern sky it stinks with greed You can smell it for miles around Good old boys in the Greystone Hotel Sitting doing that git-on-down
Oh, oh, pride of Cucamonga Oh, oh, silver apples in the sun Oh, oh, I had me some loving And I done some time
I see your silver shining town But I know I can't go there Your streets run deep with poisoned wine Your doorways crawl with fear
So I think I'll drift for old where it's at Where the weed grows green and fine And wrap myself around a bush Of that bright whoa, oh, Oaxaca vine
Yes it's me, I'm the pride of Cucamonga I can see golden forests in the sun Oh, oh, I had me some loving And I done some time And I done some time And I done some time
-------------------- Big Gulps! Alright! Well, See ya later! And if i claim to be a wise man, well, it surely means that i dont know!

Walk into splintered sunlight Inch your way through dead dreams to another land Maybe you're tired and broken Your tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear
There are way too many to pick a favorite though. Ripple, Eyes, Other one, UJB, etc.

And then a man rode into town, some thought he was the law. Billy Jean was waitin' when he came. She told me he would take her, if I didn't use my gun, I'd have no one but myself to blame.
I went down to those dusty streets, blood was on my mind. I guess that stranger hadn't heard the news Cause I shot first and killed him, Lord, he didn't even draw And he made me trade the gallows for the Mexicali Blues.
Is there anything a man don't stand to lose When he lets a woman hold him in her hands? He just might find himself out there on horseback in the dark Just ridin' and runnin' across those desert sands.

This IS truly relevant!
All the years combine, they melt into a dream, A broken angel sings from a guitar. In the end there's just a song comes cryin up the night Thru all the broken dreams and vanished years. Stella blue.

I am a simpleton for sure:
"It takes all you got just to stay on the beat"
-fire on the mountain-
I love GD, but that song always sings me back home. but in my defense there is a very good reason involving an amazing weeping willow and agreat friend. it sealed the deal.

The other day they waited, the sky was dark and faded, Solemnly they stated, "He has to die, you know he has to die." All the children learnin', from books that they were burnin', Every leaf was turnin' ; to watch him die, you know he had to die.
The summer sun looked down on him, his mother could but frown on him, And all the others sound on him, but it doesn't seem to matter.
And when the day had ended, with rainbow colors blended, His mind remained unbended, he had to die, you know he had to die.
Spanish lady comes to me, she lays on me this rose. It rainbow spirals round and round it trembles and explodes. It left a smoking crater of my mind I like to blow away. But the heat came 'round and busted me for smiling on a cloudy day.

Oh my god, these are the lyrics I tried to post 2 years ago! But it seems instead of hitting ctrl-v, I hit shift-v and wound up not posting the lyrics. Must of been on a ton of drugs. This is my favorite song of all time, by any band or musician on the planet.
