Birthing Question
    #5307668 - 02/16/06 04:22 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I've done a few PF/grain style grows, and for each grow I stepped up the jar size from half pint, to pint, and now to quart jars, but I've run into a problem. I always grow by birthing the cakes, doing a dunk/roll and sticking them into the fruiting chamber as is without casing or spawning them. The problem being that I can't find any quart sized jars with tapered mouths, so getting the cake out intact is impossible unless I shatter the jar, which is risky and also costly.

In most of the grain teks with quart jars pictured, quart jars are used, but they don't say how they deal with the problem of birthing it. Do tapered quarts exist? Am I missing something obvious, or do most people break up the mycelium and use it for casing? I would really like to fruit some quart sized cakes; help!

Stick a sharp knife (not a butter knife) up into the jar and twist/cut/rape it until all the pieces fall out. That's what i had to do..

oh but your doing cakes.. sorry

Would that technique damage the mycelium enough to affect it being able to spawn to poo/straw mediums?

you can cut up the colonize jars it will recover...if your going to case might as well shake the jars to prevent you from having to bother with cutting the mycelium out.
