Do the salt test and test it for accuracy before you rely on it.
in ziplock bag, put damp salt into small lid and wait a few hours if it reads 75% humidity you are good to go.
Look up what i just said, my memory is a bit shaky right now.

I got it from some weather place. Around $40.
Can't I just make a margerrita and dunk the meter in there instead?

You can also wrap the hygrometer in a damp wash cloth in a ziploc and it should read 95-98% it's much easier IME. GL Also What should the hygrometer read using your method HC?

Figured it out. It's non of that stuff.
It was in the back of my head but wasn't clear until a minute ago.
Calculating humidity is dependant on temperature. The units will not even bother to try before temp hits 60 degrees F. This room is 59. I moved the remote near the wood stove and bam, its readout starts climbing. Moved the base unit outside, temp drops, and humidity stays the same (20% which is its default display). They're working, now to wait for it to stabilize and give, what was your estimate? ~75%?

Actually now I'm doubly thankfull to you for suggesting these meters.
If it won't display until 60 degrees, then that means the unit IS calculating instead of just reading what the sensor says! Either that, or it's calibrated at or above 60 and it just won't read under that. Their is a curve to accurately getting an rh reading. For instance, you can put an analog hygrometer in a room 50 degrees and it will read a certain thing. Then you heat the room up and the sensor changes in improportional amount, even though your humidity didn't change much.
All you ever wanted to know about hygrometers: http://www.sensorsmag.com/articles/0997/humidity/main.shtml
And to save some work, a quote: "Temperature Effects. Most hygrometers are calibrated at a fixed ambient temperature. This may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but the temperature is usually around 25?C ?1?C. Variations from the ambient temperature can easily affect measurement results and accuracy."
