Reishi Stalled
    #5306710 - 02/16/06 12:27 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

So I bought an indoor Reishi mushroom patch from Paul Stamets, thinking this is an easy way to get started. I opened the box and it was already fruiting. Some of the caps were almost a half-inch wide. But in 10 days they've not grown at all. I mist them twice a day with rain water, fan them, have heat nearby, and still no growth. What should I do? I thought of transferring the bloc to an aquarium with perlite and water, but thought I'd ask for feedback before I do something stupid. This is my first post. There's so many teks to choose from here; I don't know which approach to adopt.

It sounds to me like one of two problems. 1. Lack of moisture. Even though you're misting, it may somehow not be enough. Are the caps cracking, or seem really dry, or do they have the sheen of glossy smoothness? Do they feel dry?

2.Lack of heat. I believe that ganodermas do best in temps around 75 F to 85 F. They'll still grow a lot colder than that, so this may not be it. If it is, maybe try a seed germinating heat mat with the thermostat from Hydrofarm. It can be adjusted to the temp you want and you can put the block right on the mat.

3. I really have no clue why they stopped, but I think that dunking the bag in fresh tap water overnight. When you pull it out it MAY regrow. Don't let my misguided ideas kill your reishi's though!!!
Best of luck, let us know, and if you can, post pics...

Thanks, Jeremy. The caps still have a sheen of moisture on them, so it's probably the heat. I'll look into a heat pad. I've kept them at about 65 degrees, but I've been inconsistent about maintaining temps. If that doesn't work, I'll try the immersion.
