ID help again.
    #5305828 - 02/16/06 07:56 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

OK so I went looking today and I found about 6 good sized mushrooms. Im not sure what they are so heres a quick describtion; They were growing out of cow dung of course in a batch of high grass. They grew single and had when they were poping up they were bright white with a gold spot on the top. The stems were hollow and white and the spores seemed to be either dark purple or blackish. Very messy as well when they were fully opened up. I have lots of pics but cant upload them yet. Ill get them in asap though. Any thoughts?

Sounds promising, but by now you should really know how to post a proper ID request. As a reminder:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2263556/an/0/page/0

Now, tell us the gill color, spore color, take a picture, read the FAQ.

Oh yeah, this time try not to test any of these out on a friend before you have an ID.

What do you mean when you say 'very messy as the opened up?' Do you mean that the gills were blackish and messy, liquidy perhaps?

Describe the mess more precisely - was it kind of liquid, like black ink?

exactly like black ink. If i didnt know it was from a mushroom then thats what i would think it was. Came from the gills I know that. It was purplish around the outside of the cap too but only when it was starting to turn up. Looks like an egg when the cap is closed when its coming up.

if you can post a pic of what you think it is then I could identify it more than likely.

Your mushroom sound like a species in the genus Coprinus. These are known as the inky caps. They are not active. A few are good edibles, some of them are edible but will make you extremely sick if you eat them and drink alcohol. When their caps are closed they are typically egg shaped.

Check out this link:

http://www.mushroomexpert.com/coprinus.html

At the bottome there are links to several members of this genus, see if your mushroom matches any of them.

They are not fuzzy though. Smooth rounds caps that look like an egg.

Funny that you mention ink because some coprinus species are commonly referred to as inky caps. They are also "egg shaped" a lot.

Not all of them are fuzzy, many are smooth. That page has only a few of the known species. And in many of those pics there is no fuzziness. And in pics taken before the cap opens they are all egg shaped. I'm 99% sure you've got coprinus, when you get your pics uploaded we'll know for sure.

You will find some eventually, with persistence. Might have better luck if you wait till the prime season

Some really common features you will find with Coprinus mushrooms are gills arranged very densely and if you look closely you will in all likelihood also be able to see lines radiating from the center of the cap down toward the edges. This viscid quality is also common with the Psilocybe genera but not nearly as pronounced? often only visible around the edges. P. cubensis will typically be far more robust than Coprinus sp.
