Water content of casing question

I hear when the casing layer starts to pull away from the sides of the container that means the water is being absorbed into the mushrooms. Therefore, the casing layer contracts.
How do I know if my casing has enough water to go from pins to full grown mushrooms?
Is there anything I could do to add more water into my casing without flooding the pins? Is it even necessary or does my casing already have enough water in it to allow my first flush to blossom?

Follow hyphae's pinning strategy. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3290155/an/0/page/0 If you follow it properly, you'll have enough water to make it through each flush. Dunking b/t flushes is a good idea.

yeaht he pinning strategy is always a good read, besides that, its normal that the casing pulls away frmo the sides but that usually happens during fruiting as the water in the sub goes into the fruitbody development.
if you get pins, ur casinglayer usually is nicely saturated and the musheis should develop normal.
a good rule for any casinglayer is, to saturate till a few drops drip out a handfull of compacted mix, then just lightly mist till you get knots and stop - et voila peace ohm

^^^^^ squeeze a handful of casing mix, a few drops of water should come out. if its already been applied, its much harder to tell it its saturated. color is a good indicator. light colors=dry casing.

don't worrie about it on the first run. casings always have enough water for the first flush but as you go on to the second and third it gets more and more dehydrated.
i have been experimenting with some new tekniques and i have been adding more (horse poo & straw) compost to the casing as when it is done with the second flush. the casing pulls away from the pan completely and then an additional layer of compost is added. harvest has doubled everytime so far. Keeping that casing as close to optimal as possible puts MUCH less demand on the substrate for the necessary moisture minimizing substrate shrinking. Near saturation is very easy to recognize really, you just make sure you mist until the casing just glistens then stop. Now you don't want to keep the casing at near saturation every moment of the day, the casing needs to transpire between FAE's. In other words if your finding one or two squirts are making the casing glisten then leave it alone it's got the perfect water content already.

I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Ya I got priorities too!!!"
