substrate question
    #530274 -

When mixing a substrate, is it possible to use perlite instead of vermiculite? are there disadvantages of doing it this way?

I personally would recommend against it. Since Perlite and Vermiculite are about the same in price when you buy them in smaller amounts.

I believe a perlite and flour substrate *will* colonize but will *not* fruit. Vermiculite can hold a lot more water than perlite can, and, it doesnt slowly release it into the air. If vermiculite is unavaiable in your area you might want to try a perlite + flour substrate but it *will* have to be cased, and, I cant guarentee that will work. I'm not sure if anybody has tried it.

there is a similiar thread on this...they do colonize, but they never fruit like homer said.
Perlite is not a very good growth medium, it is used for environmental control, for humidity.
