6-qt pressure cooker with no rack. AGH! should i take it back?

hello, first timer here, and i need some help... I purchased a 6-qt pressure cooker from kmart that fits 5- 1/2 pint jars.
it doesn't have a dial gauge, and didn't come with a rack. =/ it's the biggest one i could find in the stores for a decent price. ($39.99) bed bath and beyond had a 10 qt for 89.99, but it also lacked a dial gauge. and i thought that was a little much. online, @ target.com i did find a 23 qt pressure canner for 89.99 WITH a dial gauge AND a rack, but they don't have in in stores. and it takes like 2 weeks to ship, and has no faster shipping option. my syringes are coming withing the next 2 days and i wanted to get started with this right away. so i guess i'm stuck with what i have.
i wouldn't mind using the smaller one i have, 5 jars at a time, but i'm scared of not using a rack. i don't want my jars to crack. that would be a total waste.
so, does anyone have any suggestions on preventing this from happening in my "little guy" PC?
and please correct me if i'm wrong, but when the PF instructions say to cook at 15 psi, without the dial indicator, does that mean to just wait until the steam starts coming out and rocking? what i'm trying to ask is, how do i know for sure when it hits 15 psi?
sorry if i don't make sense. I've been studying this for about 2 months, and i'm on the brink of beggining my "experiments" and i'm freaking out.
i don't want things to go terribly wrong.
so any help on this would be amazing. thank you<3

You could always place a clean towel on the bottom of the PC. This should help to distribute heat to the jars evenly so not to cause them to crack.
When you see steam coming out of the PC, then place your weight on it at the 15 PSI setting. Then wait for it to start to rock and shake violently. Then adjust your heat so it causes the weight to rock and shake only 1-4 times a minute. This means you have 15 PSI.
You can always browse EBAY for used PCs. I found a nice 23 quart PC for $43.

Always read the instructions that come with the pc.
It will tell you how to operate it...and tell you what psi it can reach.
If you don't have a rack...you can put a towel in the bottom of the pc.
---
I'd take it back and at least get one with a pressure gauge...and a rack.
You might be able to find a good used All American pressure cooker on Ebay for cheap...they are the best.

I would do what HC says and just wait for the larger PC to be shipped to the store. It will be WELL worth the wait and will be a much better PC. I wouldn't settle on the small one just for lack of patience.

yeah, that's probably what i'm going to do....
but, it's not so much my patience thats getting to me, it's my excitement....haha
i guess maybe my patience a little too..... ahem....cough...my birthday is april 16th...cough haha well, since thats easter, my ideal date for the final process of my experiment (consumption) was April 15th....
that's if i'm lucky i guess....
but, FYI i just found an 18qt Presto on Ebay for $65, and the guy claims to have "SUPER FAST SHIPPING!" and his feedback reflects that. so i think my PC worries may be over, thank you everybody.
and sorry if i posted, or replied wrong....i'm still getting used to the forum setup...

Defiantly take it back. I suggest your PC at minimum be able to do quart jars. Mine's "small" but it will do 4 quarts at a time. It was 40 dollars at Walmart, though I can't seem to find it online for less than 60. I'd go for one of those 90 dollar jobs you mentioned, and wait it out. You could always cook a few jars first, and clean it real good before taking it back...

ahhhhhhhhhh....i see. haha what a good idea!
i just took a gander at your galley, and it seems like you're having much success with your studies! (good for you) I'm totally semi-new to all this. (meaning, i've been studying for months, and i'm starting my experiment today) and I've seen you around on alot of forums. You seem pretty awesome, so i was wondering if it was okay to PM you sometime if i have a question?
putting it up on a forum is cool, but not when you want one direct answer....
so if it's okay, let me know. and i'm going to PM you about a unrelated mushie question right quick........
