Unless you live in some fairytale land (which is possible with rent at $300 a month) Your voluntary donation box will have about $2.57 by the end of the night.
There is nothing wrong with getting a keg or two, and charging people three bucks at the door for all the beer they can drink. That is cheap for getting drunk, hell that's cheap for a sandwich. Plus, you're the one who is going to have to be scraping the vomit off the radiator the next day. You may as well make the money back you spent on the keg plus enough cash for a chair or something.

Depends on the kind of party. Charging for close friends is bogus, but they should've offered to throw down a couple bucks anyway... damn moochers. Otherwise, sure, charge a few bucks at the door if you're not in an area where you might get any violent individuals.
I remember one party, we were collecting money at the door. Ask one guy for some, he lifts his shirt to reveal a pistol. Hmm... time to leave.
