Improve Playing by 20%

No, I'm not selling anything. Just relating my own personal experience that, whenever I spend a couple of hours hiking or walking, my playing (bass, piano, guitar, kazoo) improves considerably, often more than 20%. I can cleanly pull of licks and runs I couldn't do before, and even my voice improves. So... exercise improves the muscle coordinations required for musical performance and expression.

Interesting, I buy it!
If I exercised, I could account for it... anyone else find this true?

no doubt some excercise can help improve a persons playing.. whether it be a short warm up just to get the blood moving or depending on your instrument a little weight lifting should help build some extra strength and endurance for playing more demanding styles of music for extended periods of time..
although after taking a hike or a walk or whatever it's possible you might get some extra creative juices flowing just from being out and about interacting with nature and such.. in some sense I guess it might be like giving your mind a little bit of a work out, elevating your mood and centering your focus as a kind of side effect from being in and around the expansive beauty that nature has to help stimulate your mind with.

Ekomstop, I think you nailed it: "centering your focus" is the best way to describe the effect.

It may not be exercise(though I'm sure being healthy helps), but instead the clearing of the mind and muscle memories attached to muscianship. I find that I get stuck in ruts and repeat things often, and that if I take a couple days break from playing I almost always take it to a new level and place.

It's my opinion that playing increases your playing by 20% or more
