Gymnopilus Spectabilis found in eastern TN...

Hello all I am new to the forum here and I must say I like what I see. Ive been studying and reading all I could starting freshman year in high school (7 years ago). Back in late Aug of this year I found three small specimens of G. Spectabilis on an unidentified rotting tree along a small creek bank in far eastern TN along The Great Smokey Expressway. They were each about 2-3 inches in height with a cap diameter of 1.5-2.5 inches. Incase anyone was wondering about the potency of this species (in this area anyway) I can tell you that those three small specimens did the trick for a couple of hours. I am experienced but have a medium high personal sensativity. I like this species as it is not hard to confuse with anything else and I believe subsequent trips to that area could lead to subsequent trips

G. spectabilis is a real meaty mushroom similar macroscopically tot he honey mushroom.
Your descriptions sounds awful small for a big laughing Gym.

Indeed they were very small for GS. They were young specimens but small none the less. I am very familiar with honey mushrooms. I pick and stir fry them frequently. Honey mushrooms dont bruise black and they do not have a bright orange spore print. If they were not Gymnopilus Spectabilis then I have discovered an identical(cept smaller) active species with identical spore print to GS. No pictures to show as I consumed them in the car on the way back as soon as my spore print showed up. I have spent over a third of my life emersed in the mycological world. If I could not possitively identify a mushroom there is no chance I would ever eat it!

So you have spent over a third of your life studying mycology eh? That is good to know. It's nice to see some folks who show such an interest and take time to study the wonderful world of mycology. I also enjoy honey mushrooms.

Sounds cool to me.. I enjoyed the Gyms I found and I look for then more than Cubes at the moment due to no Cubes.. But the Gyms seem to be rather shy in showing there faces.. I have been forced to look hard for them.. Deep inside the root cavity's of water Oaks..
