Best casing for beginner
    #5299263 - 02/14/06 01:39 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I was just wondering what type or casing medium would be good for a first time grower. I was thinking just to use vermiculite to make my casings

I have read about this coco coir a lot on here. Would I be able to find it at a Home DePot... and what % would the mixture be

Peat and verm is a much better mix then coir and verm. I've been using coir as an additive to my substrates more then a casing layer now because of it's fast colonization.

I wouldn't suggest coir as a casing material. 50/50 Chunky verm + peat moss + PH buffer is the way to go.

Hey, thanks for the links Snaggletooth. I have some PF tek jars incubating that are going to be done within a week and I really wanted to turn atleast 2 of the 1/2 pint jars into a small 9x9 casing and was torn as to what casing mix to use. I think I am going to go with 60/40 verm/coco coir just because the casing isn't that large and I should be able to be ontop of the overlay. But those threads are definitely awesome reads.
