Crumble or Whole for BRF casing?
    #5299009 - 02/14/06 12:12 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Hi everybody. I'm a long time lurker / first time poster.

I just finished my first casing using BRF cakes and verm, and instead of crumbling I left the cakes whole. I figure there is less risk of contam, but has anyone done this, and if so, which is better in your opinion?

Thanks.

Hello,

You should have crumbled it,

1, It creates more inoculation points, faster colonization

2, Better distributes of the Nutrients

3, A hole cake will not have a less chance of contaminates, just the other way, now the rest of the case is 'unprotected'.

4. Now that you have cased it I don't know if you can undo it now, If it has not been long then you might be able to mix it up.

Good luck  :mushroom2:

Yeah, I agree with snaggle. Plus, crumbling the cakes will give you a more even substrate layer. That even-ness is key in forming a good pinset.

Thanks for the quick reply! The myc is already breaking the surface so i'm pretty much stuck with my mistake, but hopfully I will still get a few good prints to work with.

Has anyone else done this and gotten good/bad results?
