Electric Bills
    #5298531 - 02/14/06 09:49 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Would running a space heater inside a room to keep the temp use more energy than making a t.i.t. and using an aquarium heater?

Im not to farmiliar with electrical bills/usage; im moving into a condo within the next month and looking to see whats most efficient and wont send my electrical bill through the roof.

I will most likely end up making a t.i.t. for incubation and use the space heater for fruting. For reference tho, would these increase my electrical bill dramatically? Does it depend on the electric company im with, and where i live?

It all depends on the wattage of the space heater and type. Ceramic heaters are more energy efficient than coil so start there. I run two space heaters in my house and I haven't noticed any significant increase in my electricity bill. You'll need to check your bill to see how much they charge per kilo-watt hour. If you are using a 1500 watt heater and have it set at medium heat, you may only use 750 watts per hour. Take that times the amount charged per kilo-watt hour and you have your expense.

Even that is subjective, as the heater will not run continuously, just when needed.

A good average in the US is ten cents per kwh. A kilowatt-hour is one killowat(1000 watts) used for one hour.

This means a 1500 watt heater running full time would use 15 cents per hour.

My space heater has settings for 400 watt, 750 watt, and 1500 watt. I use the 400 watt setting, so at the figure above of ten cents per kwh, that heater uses 4 cents per hour. As Wronguy stated, you only pay when it's actually running.

I'd recommend a space heater over a tit or incubator. Just get your room up to 75 or so in the winter and everything will grow fine. Jars may need a day or two longer than at 80, but who cares?

A space heater will cost far far more than an aquarium heater! that is taking a cold room and using it specifically for growing in. When I say far more I mean % wise, the energy itself is fairly cheap. If you are living in the room it is not a real loss since it needs to be warm. I grow in the bedroom which is empty all day and only heated at night. It would be ineffiecent to have it at 82F all day, it is at about 60F during the day. I would need about 2000W constant to keep it that warm, which is about ?5-6 per day. But as roger says you can get away with less.

I had a heat pad which was 15W and was far to powerful!

Well the house has electric heat. Id be able to set the room to 75F without the space heater but that would most likely be very costly, right?

BTW, its a Maxi-Heat 1500W; coil i think, not ceramic.

It has a digital thermostat/thermometer. It also has a timer; would setting it to go on once every 2-3 hrs to bring the room up to 75 be okay? Would fluxuating temps for fruting be alright? Im guessing it would be 75 for an hour or so, then drop down to maybe 70 or lower.

The expense of keeping the condo at 75 really depends in large part on the insulation and whatnot. As well as the average temp of your area. No one here can really make an estimate as to how much it'd cost you to keep it at 75.

Temps fluctuating b/t 70 and 75 is fine for fruiting.
