The cool mists do not burn out because of back pressure. Who thought that one up? These are induction motors, not brush motors. There is nothing to burn up in there. What usually happens is that the motor freezes up with rust and won't spin up one day. The best way to prevent it is to never store a cool mist with water in the chamber. And if you are running a cool mist off and on, you are asking for it. They won't last long like that because when they are off with water in the chamber, they are rusting.

I said it first. The backpressure forces water into the bushings, which ruins them, and the increased load burns out the motor. That is a fact. Nobody thought it up. Also, an induction motor is very capable of 'burning up'. It has windings and current flow. The presence of brushes has nothing to do with whether a motor can burn up or not. With bad bushings, the excess current flow caused by the increased load smokes the windings.

Maybe that's why ultrasonics last longer, because the motor is only used to shake a flat piece of metal and it doesn't come in contact with water

I guess I never have a problem because I never run with super high back pressure like that then. I have always covered the intake about 80% with masking tape. If I run my unit without covering the input like that, water drips out of the water seal anyway from all the back pressure. Stop running them with all that back pressure and maybe they would stop freezing up. I've been using the same Kaz unit for two years and thousands of hours. Before that I froze two units before I figured out that you can't let them sit even for a week with water in them.

Hold on so are you saying you covered the intake about 80% or the original exhaust about 80%? Wasn't sure if you kept it from sucking in the maximum amount of air or if you let some air out the original exhaust while pumping air up through a hose.

My apologies for my denseness if this question seems stupid.

Yes, I restricted the intake by covering it most of the way with masking tape to prevent the backpressure from splashing water all over the place. If you are restricting the output, you might as well restrict the intake too.

so i should cover 80% of the intake? sounds wierd, but for now i'll try anything.... i buy new one's each time, and 3 greenhouses. Yikes! $$$

all my 2nd hand stores have nothing, either that or i just go at bad times. There's another mycofan in my town i know it!

I would not restrict an intake.

I try to match the outlet size hose/pipe or whatever.

To the same dimension of the original outlet, before adapting it to hose.

That way you stay near what it's design spec's are.

For instance, if the outlet size is 3 square inches.

3...... separate 1 inch hoses would be about equal.

Ribbed pool type hose works great & doesn't kink.
(found it at truevalue hardware store for cheap.)

I would suggest you do.

Less distance = less restriction.

That's my G/f's setup... i have mine sitting on a 5 gal bucket.

When i get home from work, i will move her's to a 5 gal bucket too...

Thanks!! hopefully this will help out, and maybee i'll add mor hose outlets to relieve pressure.

Might sound weird, but there are about three ways to reduce these puppies:

1) Re-direct some of the output to a different place keeping the overall output non-restricted. This sucks because now you have to refill the water daily.

2) Restrict the output only - this sucks because the water splashed out of the unit from the back pressure and, in some cases I guess, water is driven into the bearings.

3) Restrict the input and output proportionally - this is great because it works without any bad effects and you don't have the fill the chamber much.

You can do what you want, but I can tell you that restricting the input doesn't hurt these units. We aren't dealing with a water pump here where the input restriction is going to burn it up. Besides, I already have proven it works fine. Just do it and stop worrying about it.

i'll try it out... no complaints from me. i am runnig out of things to buy for this hobby anyway. i just hate going in there being like
" Hiya shirley... getting another coolmist today...haha"

"ok...have a nice day!"

taping it as we speak.... intake being same diameter as output,.

(also, i placed it up on a 5 gal bucket) - Thanks Agar, and Blue Helix

Dont make it the same diameter if they werent the same diameter to start with though. Like blue helix said "proportionally," Say if you tape of the output 50% then tape off the input 50% too, making them the same diameter if they werent to start with is going to throw it all off and you might just end up with another broken cool mist depending on the diameters.

And to RR's post above, it seems like if you put it inside the greenhouse there will be no FAE, instead just recirculating the air inside, and in the big picture kind of destroying one of the big reasons for using a cool mist all together. Don't know if thats true, since I have not used one that way before but in theory it seems to be kind of counterproductive.

ya know! i am getting sick of this!

Another one down the drain! Broken, as of yesterday.

** I am not going to modify these anymore, just STUFF the hose in there and tape up the remaining open spots.

i thought there would be a problem with contams on the masking tape, but with the lifespan of these things anyway. there shouldn't be any worry... i would say they are lasting about 2 weeks.
