Anyone know what the average life expectancy of a Vicks cool mist Impeller type humidifier?
I have bought these brand new from the store, and they only seem to last a month...
All of a sudden, it just stops working, and won't power on. I have tried to take it apart but have been unsuccessfull....
Anyone know what the problem is? I have had to replace the humidifiers about once a month.... and I have 3 greenhouses. This kinda sux.
But the big kick in the ass.... is i made a new one 5 days ago, and it's alreay Bunk. I can't take it back because i drilled a hole in it! Please advise??!?

How many cool mist humidifiers have you gone through now? That seems extremely short of a time period, and pretty worthless if you ask me. I dont think it would have ever made it into a tek if they all only last 1 month. I havent used one yet but was planning on it when I made my setup and am curious to know too.

Putting them back together is the hard part. There is a metal plate above the motor with the holes tapped into it for those screws. It's a real bitch to line up that plate. The motor itself is a common 'fart fan' motor available at lowes or home depot, but really not worth the effort to change out unless it's all you can afford. You can get the motor for $8.
Here's the deal. The hose you're running is creating backpressure which forces mist into the motor bushings, ruining them. I was going through humidifiers just like you are before I discovered this. Simply place the humidifier on a shelf in your greenhouse. It will last a year that way. However, they have a two year warranty. As long as you don't drill holes in it, you can return for credit when it fails. The main problem inside the greenhouse is the bushings will get coated with spores and they will also ruin it, but not for a year or so. If it's full of spores, and that is what caused the motor to fail, I'd recommend playing it safe by just tossing it out and buying another though. RR

Could it be that most people have them on the floor and outlet way above making the cool mist work harder in forcing the mist upwards in thin tubing? Maybe if the cool mist was placed above the stress on the motor could be reduced?
Just guessing....

i had mine above my FC...
and i still had that problem. then again, i recall now that of the two that broke; one of them got filled too high with water (motor submerged) and the other was already used from goodwill.
so maybe that is the case, i dont know.

What size hoses are you guys using?
Omni it looks like your using a pool filter hose correct? 1-1/4" or 1-1/2"

yeah, pool hose. 1-1/4" i think a smooth hose would be more effecient, but the pool hose is just so damn cheap.

What about stepping up to an 1-1/2" Pool Hose? that might help to cut down on the back pressure the smaller hose is creating.
You can also try using flexible PVC from a hardware or pool store. It can be purchased per ft, is smooth on the inside, and comes in wider range of sizes up to 2-1/2"
I am interested in building a Martha too, but do not want to encounter this problem of cool mist machines breaking down on me left and right. Plus I like modding things anyways...
If you don't want to fool with it anymore just follow RR's advice and put the unit inside of the FC. It seems the best solution to me.

i also saw a post where someone taped a funnell to the opening with a hose comming out of that... this way, if you experience a prob. take the funnell off and, just take it back.

you could try ultrasonics on a timer, mine has been running for like 2 months and still no problems, it doesn't do much for the FAE

Is the problem just with the cool mists? The motors burn up b/c of the back pressure? How would an ultrasonic with say an aquarium air pump sitting at the bottom do? Would an aquarium air pump do enough FAE for a shelve system?

Not in such a large area. I think the volume of these Martha and greenhouse setups have a much larger volume than most fishtanks. There are some huge ass tanks out there and I'm sure air pumps exist that could work for such volume (or by using multiple pumps), but it's not efficient costwise IMO.
Coolmists can be had cheaply and they work...for a period of time.

I have accumulated a closet full of coolmists & coolmist clones from thrift stores, all for $2, or $3 apiece. Bigger outlet hose extends the motor life, as that lowers back pressure.

ya I went looking down at all the local thrift shops here and no cool mists. Most of the guys there are a bunch of old hacks and weren't too friendly when I went in there. Then the local walgreens sells the vicks coolmist impeller type for 27 bucks. Like taking a kick to the groin. I dont know if all this coolmist stuff is worth the hassle. What other methods are there that can keep the humidity up and offer great FAE in a martha type setup without using a coolmist?
