pftek cake fruiting only on bottom??

I have 2 week old jars (since birth) using PF Tek and an automated, nicely built terrarium, using perlite to humidify. This is my second time around and I did everything the same. First time was very successful, well monitored and no contamination. This time I am only getting fruiting on the underside of the cake(would be top of jar if upright, where dry vermiculite layer was before birth). Did some research and was planning on the "dunk and roll"tek to save them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ya, my PF cakes only want to sprout out of the bottom also, don't know why.

Your cakes are probably dry. Are they sitting directly on the wet perlite layer? If so, they are wicking water into themselves, and that is why the bottoms are fruiting. The RH is also higher the closer you get to the perlite layer. Fruit will grow where the conditions are closest to optimal (i.e., high H2O content, High RH, etc.). If the cake is already fruiting, wait until carpophores mature, remove them, dunk for 24 hours, roll in vermiculite, and return to the FC. Your next flush will show great improvement.

Agreed thats the reason they fruit in areas where water (moisture) is most abundant.

Thanks. Actually I had a drip shield last time as well... so, that makes sense. Again, thanks for the confirmation on the "dunk and roll", I really appreciate the quick response.

I am having the same trouble...so is there anything I can do...I mean I can tell that my cakes are slightly more dry on top than on bottom, but is there anything I can do before my next flush?

I believe it to be moisture too. I have cakes pinning now, and I noticed a small pool of water on my foil where the cake sits. I have pins on different locations of cake. But I did notice a cluster fuck of pins forming on 3 of my cakes where the moisture is sitting on my foil! I usually let the pool stand a few hours then drain it from the foil.

When i see my cake is fruiting at the bottom i just flip it over, the shroomies start to grow towards the light. I've never had an issue doing this.

I've been wondering that too... seems like it would expose a lot more surface area.

Okay...so I may have a major catastrophe on my hands but...this is what I did...I took off the few little guys that were growing on 4 of my cakes and resoaked all 10, but did NOT recase...Will this solve my problem if they were too dry? They seemed to have soaked up a nice amount of water...

It'll fix the immediate moisture issue but if there's no verm on them they may start to dry out. If they still have verm you should be good
If you think they're drying out prematurely check your perlite. If it feels dry you may need to rehydrate it. When you mist give the perlite a few good blasts close range. I have a tarp under my sgfc so if I think it's dry I just pour water onto the perlite about 1/4 liter at a time until I go to mist and there's a puddle on the ground

It sounds like your humidity is low. Don't forget to mist daily, and I'd put a spoonful of vermiculite on top of the cake and then you can soak it once daily.
You shouldn't have picked the pins off before dunking. They usually survive. RR
