cigarettes are relaxing. If you were feeling anxious, having a cig could of helped take the edge off.
Also, the simple proccess of having a smoke could be enough of getting your mind off of whatever was making it a bad trip. It gives your mind something else to focus on enough to get it into a happier place.

it could be a LOT of things in combination, but you might take it at a sign that you're addicted and try to stop smoking.
but most likely it's what kaniz said, just got your mind off of things long enough to find a more comfortable zone.

Some times i can feel a bad trip coming on. Well more so i can feel myself becoming overwhelmed.
Normally changing the scenery, going outside somthing like that will cool things off.
Psychadelics can be unpredictable like that.

Yeah a change of music, setting, people or activity (get up and dance!) I've heard can alter the trip positively if you feel a bad one coming on.

A lot of times just changing my sitting position or moving from the couch to the bed can do a world of good. Especially on a super-heavy DXM trip, and that's if I'm able to move.
Maybe your body was craving a cigarette really badly and it just felt a lot differen than usual, given the circumstances.

congas, djembes (sp.?), bongos, any kind of drum like that is like trip insurance. I simply cannot have a bad time with hand drums in front of me.

Listening to Jimi Hendrix always blows my mind when I'm tripping. If I'm in a bad state of mind, or I can feel something like ego-death approaching, I just crank up the Hendrix and before I know it, I'm sitting there in awe. Can't keep my mind offa' it.
If I'm not tripping that hard, sometimes guitar is good to play as well. Usually if I'm sensing a bad trip coming on, I'll be too "out there" to really pick up my guitar and safely play. That is, not endangering my git box.

I am not a big fan of cigarettes, but once during a trip I was sitting outside with some friends and decided to have a social smoke. For most of the duration of the cigarette I felt great all over, in fact I remember thinking that it was perhaps the greatest I had felt in my entire life... then all of a sudden I felt guilty, like I was polluting my body so I threw it out. But I still felt great. So I don't think it was your cigarette addiction persay, rather the mood elevation that can just come from smoking.
