Pressure Cooker with 1/2PT jars of the pf BRF mixture.
    #5295968 - 02/13/06 05:34 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

So, tell me....

I have a PC on the way (thanks eBay!) and I am going to be starting with BRF cakes. I see that many people suggest that you do not have to PC the jars. While this is great, I plan to PC the jars anyway. I figure I will have less trouble with contamination.

So, in all the tek's I read, it seems that people leave their jars slightly ajar when PC'ing them (to prevent pressure and explosion) and promptly close them when the PC cools off. I also note that most folks that prepare jars use the "4 hole" method of puncturing the lid (for later knock up.)

My question is this: Why do you need to leave the lids ajar if you have holes punched in the lid? Or do you? Seems to me you could just leave the tape off the holes, cover with foil and PC.

Where am I going wrong with my thinking?

If the holes are able to breath, then you can close the lids tight. Are you using tyvek?

I am not sure if I want Tyvek or poly-fill. I have both, but am not sure how I am going to go.

Edit* I have mushrooms next to my name!! WOOHOO!
Thanks Easter Bunny!

It's my prediction that by the time you get things under-way, your plans will be very different than they are now. You might change jar sizes, substrate, etc. I use both polyfill and tyvek (2 layers of tyvek) with my jars, but its all preference I guess.

I appreciate the answer. I plan to document my work to present here. I am hoping to have the PC by the weekend.

I am also going to be preparing a jar of LC before hand. I hope to use this in the jars vs direct spores.

Preparing an LC jar only takes a min or two, you're going to want to PC it as well, so there isn't much good in preparing yout LC jar before getting your PC.
