The only movies that scared me when I was young were the Nightmare on Elmstreet vids. But I never cried about them.

well yeah i mean, out of fear.
i'm in many ways what people would consider a pussy.
The thing is I closed my eyes.... you know, I didn't know what was actually up on the screen, so I got to have the benefits of a childlike imagination plus the vivid sounds.
It was at universal studios at this like, behind the scenes show and they did a thing on Hitchcock, I was like "I'm going to watch this" to be brave but as soon as it started it creeped me right the hell out.

to the mind murder is real regardless of simulation.
i do suppose nightmare on elm street would have scared me in many more ways, but Hitchcock had to work with some "limitations" in his day so I mean, he really knew how to pull peoples strings with his stuff.

I watched a crazy interview with Hitchcock for a Motion Picture class once, that guy was amazing.
He said something along the lines of (pardon the misquote)
"You can blow up someone, and scare the audience for a few seconds, or you can show them the bomb, hidden under a table, with people oblivious all around it. Then the audience is involved, then the audience says 'Don't sit there talking, there's a goddamn bomb about to go off!' "

yeah I saw that too I think.
What is really neat is he'd know exactly how EACH little scene would look before he ever shot it...... every minute detail.

yeah, the same reason that nudity isnt acceptable in this country as a whole, some of the 'oral' majority decided to speak out to their close friends the legislators and managed to get laws passed requiring ratings to be placed on films. as a child I was allowed to watch what ever I wanted, my mother didnt shelter me in any way she allowed me to experience life and get into trouble, I got to watch scary movies, nudity and hear cussing, seems she though it a better idea to be there in case I had questions about what I saw
the way I see it, inapproprate ways to shock kids is through the use of electricity or with a hand puppet on your penis, what's sickening is that that 'poor kid' is going to shoot up his school at 17 or grow older and become one of the 'oral' majority that lobbys for bills that require people to register to have sex because he couldnt get laid himself as a teen.
the kid probably deserved what he got, ever seen how a step parent is treated? "you cant boss me around, you arent my dad" "fuck you ass hole, you arent my dad", really though, what it boils down too is the kids mom needs to stop molly coddling him and let him be a normal 10 year old, maybe that little event is what turns his life around and he steps away from the computer and his chubby little ass can see finaly see the light of day. maybe he will make friends and everything.

I just showed it to my 4 year old daughter and the video and she thought it was funny, then wanted to know why that kid was crying like a baby. I don't guess we had any trauma here.
I thought it was hilarious.

EDIT: The second question is cut off. Supposed to be "Do you think the kid will be scarred for life?"

I agree that it was fucked up, and I agree that the kid will be fine. The only fucked up part was taping him for so long after he ran away.
"It's rediculous because everyone HAS BEEN a child. How could you possibly not remember what it was like to 5-6 years old or older? "
It isn't as simple as it sounds. The brain is in a completely different stage of development at that young of an age. It isn't as though you can just put these things into place by memory, though you can come up with a pieced together version that fits certain needs... same as most memories. At that age, your brain is physiologically and neurologically drastically different.
I doubt the incident itself will have a profound impact on the kid's life. But if it's a hint as to the kind of crap he gets pulled on him all the time, it might be bad times. On the one hand, the kid seemed fairly confident and normal in the beginning. On the other hand, the dude really did ignore him and continue to video tape the tears rolling down his face. That was kind of sadistic. If it's a regular thing, it'll definitely have a big impact on such an early stage of development.

You make some good points, but it doesn't change the fact this stuff happens ALL the time.
Just watch "America's Funniest Videos" (for which this video would be a good contender).
I bet the kid would be really thrilled to have that video on national TV, especially if he won a few grand or more.
EDIT:
In fact, now that I've mentioned it, maybe THAT'S EXACTLY WHY the stepdad took that video!

Yeah, like I said, the only thing to worry about is the fact that the dude might be a dick to him all the time.

Hold up, nudity doesn't make most kids cry hysterically and have nightmares. This isn't a culture issue, it's a scaring-the-shit-out-of-five-year-olds issue. Two separate subjects, thus irrelevant
And then what the fuck's up with the step-parent thing? Not all step-parents are treated like shit, that's a stupid generalization, you can't make up a scenario out of thin air to prove that scaring the shit out of a little kid is okay
Like I said, I'm not trying to argue that this kid was scarred for life, obviously he wasn't; but wtf is funny about terrifying a poor kindergartener? He didn't learn anything useful because of it, except maybe he's more scared of his stepdad now, and how is that good? Yeah, he wasn't beaten or verbally abused or anything but he was needlessly terrorized. I wouldn't dream of doing anything like that to a kid that young; it's totally pointless
