Aww I thought this thread would be ABOUT Dune.

Only read the first two books myself. Would like to read the third later... I like the first one better, but they were both good.
I like the idea of laseguns and forcefield technology create harmful nuclear explosions, thus hand to hand combat proliferated. I also like how it avoided techno-babble and delt alot with the advancment humans as a species (genetically) instead of pure technological advancement. And of course it had alot of politics in it which was good.
As for the shows/movie, the new sci-fi mini series sucked, yet i still watched all 6 parts. The old movie is awsome, but i think you have to have read the book to apprecieate the movie. Before I read the book, i didnt really undertand the movie.
My old physics teacher was a big dune fan. He said that frank herbert died while in the midst of writing the latest part in the series. All the dune fans were upset (for the author and the book), but then years later the son of frank herbert found the long lost notes for the writting of this book. Unfortunatly instead of finishing his father's last work, the son has been writing pre-quels.

For staying true to the book, I prefer the Sci-Fi miniseries...but I didn't see the second one sadly. The first movie is cool as well, but for me the series captures it better.
I have read a few of the pre-quels, and they aren't quite up to par with Frank's work. His writing wove so many ideas and themes together it would be hard to duplicate though!
