Pasteurizing and Supplementation
    #5294336 - 02/13/06 11:04 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

So Ive seen a few posts lately of people having success pasteurizing supplemented sawdust, its really exciting!

I was reading last night in GGMM that even when using straw, when supplementing w/ bran sterilization is better.

Is anyone pasteurizing supplemted straw? How do you do it?

Has anyone tried pasteurizing straw w/ the steam method, IE using a small amount of water on bottom and boiling that water to create steam, and pasteurizing the above straw w/ that steam. Would you need to presoak the straw in that case? Thanks for any thoughts and please post any experiences pasteurizing substrates.

Hey Matty!
I've tried the steam bath method with straw supplemented with banana leaves, coffee grounds, blood meal, and earthworm castings too. They all work. The straw must be pre-soaked. Steam for two to four hours is what worked for me.
I grew the reishis in the ECHO farm thread with pasteurized sawdust supplemented with bran. Half my bags succeeded half died. so that's not too good.Commercially unfeasible, but with some hard work, I bet it can be done. Micolo2 is doing it with shiitake so he's probably a few years ahead of me in knowledge in that area, maybe he'll chime in. Talk to you soon!

If you have access to it, the best way to supplement pasteurized straw or sawdust is by adding more colonized grain spawn.
