If you could give a little bit more info, like how much substrate is in the bags and the avg temp of where you keep them I can help more. Heating blankets will work well with bags I've done it plenty of times, but you deff want to "crumble up the bags to spread the white around". The network has an great ability to easily repair itself. If the temps where your keeping them are around 60-70 degrees everything you say sounds right on track, but use the heating pat and make sure you do some playing with the settings first. You want it as close to 83 as possible because after adding in the heat generated by natural activity then its around 86.5 perfect for optimal growth. Of course I know a heating pad isn't the best option, but it will work and only heat the bottom of your bags, thats why crumbling will be your best bet, moving the white to the top of your bag where its cooler, so new growth can grow at bottom where its optimal, I used to flip my bags over at 50% when I used a heating pat to heat like 45 bags. Anyways peace.

Most heat pads are way too hot. Use a buffer between the bags and heater to even out the heating, i.e. put a blanket between them so they do not get too hot.

Black splotch is not a good sign. If it looks like black mold, dump it. If nothing else isolate that bag away from your other bags until you have determined whether it is contaiminated or not. Afoaf used heating pads with success. Large plastic container with plenty of towels on either side of pad in bottom. Heating pads can be dangerous and unpredictable. Do not want pad touching plastic bottom of container or the Mycobags. Do not put on highest setting and watch for any sign of malfunction of heating pad or you could end up burning the house down
