The Completely Automated Stealth Tub - a.k.a. Leviathan 1

Welp, those of you who have read my posts KNOW that stealth is a large factor with me. There is no telling who might wander in and at what time. You NEVER know. So I have racked my brain trying to come up with the stealthiest way possible to grow shrooms with no noise and no suspicion when you look at the tub. And of course, fresh air exchange is a must. And I'm sorry, but polyfill stuffed holes acting like santa claus out the side of a tub is NOT stealthy. That will raise suspicion.
So, INTRODUCING, The Leviathan.
Powered by one computer fan connected to an automated timer to control the exact amount of fresh air exchange without sucking out humidity. Also incorperated is a timer-operated small fluorscent light operating on a 12/12 time.
On the outside, it looks just like a regular tub. But inside, it's a powerhouse operating to deceive the mind and eye.
LETS START CONSTRUCTION!
Step 1 First, lighting the inside of a tub causes it to glow in the dark. Now if you are lucky enough to find a VERY THICK tub that does not allow ANY light to pass though, then GET IT. It will make your time a hell of alot easier.
The first step is to spray the inside of the tub and lid with rubberized undercoating. $4. I have really had good luck (on various applications) with the stuff from Wal-**** in the automotive section. If you get some somewhere else, make sure it says "rubberized" on it.
Pictured here is the tub halfway sprayed down.
The downside to the undercoating is that it takes 24 hoursto dry. And you MUST let it dry. And if you can, bring it in the house to dry.
Another downside is that you must give it two coats. (One can will do you.)
This is a very important step and will cost you two days. BE PATIENT. It will be worth it.
Step 2 More delays, sorry. Once the undercoating has dried. You need to spray the inside of the tub and lid again with white paint. (As you will see from other steps, I did this step later. But seriously, do it now; it will be much easier. Just get the el-cheapo $1 FLAT WHITE paint at Wal-****. Again, allow 16-24 hours to dry completly.
Step 3 Now, the airflow. First off, a good little tidbit of information is that vibration causes most noises. So, if we are going to be hooking up a computer fan, we can't mount it directly to the tub. We MUST have it dampened somehow.
I used eggshell foam. You can find this at most hardware stores, but I got mine from a package in the mail. Simply place the fan on the flat side of the foam and trace a line around the outside. Then user a razer blade to cut the traced hole. NOTE: Don't cut along the line. Be sure and cut inside the line so the fan will be nice and tight.
Once you are done, stuff the fan in there. The airflow will be heading toward the eggshell side of the foam. Also, make sure your fan wires are heading INTO the tub. Feel free to trim excess foam off.

Step 4 Cut the same sized hole in the lid. Take the fan out of the foam, and put it on the lid and trace. Then use a jiggsaw to cut it out. Or any other tool. Now this hole should be a tad bit BIGGER than the fan hole. The foam around the fan is going to hold the fan in place.

Note: Do not put the fan hole in the middle of the lid, put it off to the side. You are going to put the light in the middle of the lid.
Step 5 Airflow 102. There is a rule regarding backpressure for all fans. The intake holes should be at least two times the size of the outtake holes. I tried to follow this rule as much as I could.
Also, you don't want dead air pockets inside your grow chamber. So, take a trip to the hardware store and buy 2" thin wall PVC pipe. Now, drill large holes straight through it. So that there are holes on two opposite sides of the pvc pipe.

You are going to want to make TWO pipes this way.
Step 6 Now, you will need a 2" diameter hole drill to drill two holes in the bottom of your tub as shown here:

Step 7 Wrap duct tape around the ends of the pipes so they have a nice snug fit inside the holes and slide them in there.

Note: You are going to want the sets of holes to be horizontal, meaning you shouldn't see them when looking down. This is because you are going to put your casings on top of the pipes.
Step 8 Hooking up the fan.
In order to hook up the fan, you are going to need to use/buy/find etc. a 9v or 12v DC transformer. I bought this one for 3 bucks at a flea market. You might have one from an old cell phone charger. Etc etc.
Hooking one up is simple. Cut the end of the plug off from the transformer. Then split the wires and attach to the fan. Then wrap them tight with the electrical tape. Make sure you check the polarity of the fan though to be sure it is spinning the correct way. If not, reverse the wires.

Step 9 Put the fan back in the foam. Now, get some double side tape and line it around the outside of the hole in the container lid. Then you can put the fan and foam on top of that. Remember to run the wire into the underside at the lid.

Step 10 Now, its light attaching time. Again, I got a small light at Wal-****. Attach it to the middle of the lid via directions.

To make things easier later, you should cut a slit in the lid where the cords touch the end to hold them in place.
Step 11 Stuff a little bit of polyfill into the intake holes. Not too thick though! It hinders the fan.

Step 12 Now as you may have been wondering, how are you going to hide the fan on the top of the lid? Simple.
Take a cardboard box of any size - preferably one that fits snuggly against the top of the tub. (The filter is optional.) And cut out the bottom of it and the side. Make sure the bottom cutout is big enough to encompass the foam/fan. Attach the filter (to keep spiders and critters out.)

Put it on top of the fan and BOOM.
YOU ARE DONE!!!!!
Finished product:

I have the timers set on 12/12 and for the fan, I have it set on for 13 minutes every 4 hours. (I will tweak it later.)
Basically that is it! Make sure you have your wires hidden around back and that the pipes are sticking out the back. Now it just looks like a cardboard box on top of the tub.
Good luck!
ADDITION: If you have a cold room and you want to put this in a TiT but do not want water to come in, then all you have to do is get some sort of plastic trey to put in the bottom of the tub to elevate it off the water a bit.

Nice going!
One question though. Are you sure that reversing the wires on the fan does not cause it to run in the opposite direction?
The PVC intake is quite a gem. I like that.

Ya know, I didn't think about the opposite direction. I knew it WORKED, but didn't check the polarity. Thanks for pointing that out. I will edit.

The outside? That kinda defeates the ENTIRE purpose of a "regular looking tub."

Nice work indeed. The only flaws I see are RH. The substrate and casing can only provide so much and you have a fan blowing air directly on them. The other concern may be heat generation from the light. While I do not see a problem with safety, the light may generate enough heat to bring the fruiting substrates outside of optimal parameters.
While I agree that the double/mono tubs are not a stealth setup, they have their purpose in mushroom cultivation. Your fruiting chamber, while in a tub, is in a completely different category. There is no comparison to the double/mono tubs except that both applications use plastic tubs. Either way, nice work documenting this. Detailed and organized.
Five shrooms for you my friend.

Haha, that's an awesome stealth setup! Nice work.
Only thing I would mention, those 80mm fans generally run 25-30 CFM. I don't think it will cause issues, but with that type of timer (15 minute increments), if you have a 60mm fan laying around, it would run closer to the recommended FAE. Although, final CFM will be less due to static pressure, and I'm not a math whiz, so I'm certaintly not knocking.

Yep yep. Thanks for the kind words from both of you. I do agree with both as well.
I am still in the experimentation phase with optimal conditions regarding humidity.
I do know, Wronguy, that the light will not cause problems. I have been using the same exact light in a non-automated tub for quite a while. Works GREAT.
And I do hope to combat the humdity with either my perlite pouch i recently introduced, or using a perlite pickle in the bottom of the tub. I will see as time goes by.
Thanks again~

Thanks for the comment.
richard, yep, I agree with you. Sorry about my post before, I reread it and it sounded quite cocky. Anyway, I just checked the can for anything that might causes a problem. There is no mention of "petrolium product" on the can. There is something the state of Calif. says will cause a birth defect, but....eh....I'm not in Calif.

If you're placing your substrate in seperate containers, I wouldn't think the paint would be a concern.
After checking out your post last night, I started looking around for PC control units, and again found the X10 website. I don't know if they're the only game in town, but they've got some pretty cool s@#t. The base unis -w- software is 50 dollars, and connects to a PC via USB. Then you buy seperate modules depending on your needs. For a setup like yours, a 30 dollar 2 plug module would fit the bill. For around 80 plus shipping, you could program the light and fan to come on and off any time you wanted. They also sell lamp modules for like a dollar more. Those would allow you to adjust the air flow and brightness. It wouldn't be necessary, but it'd be nice to play with for a dollar more.
They have a 99 dollar starting kit (which I'd like just to fuck with my friends) but it only comes with single receptacle modules, which is a waste of an outlet. I'm trying to move away from powered solutions, but I'm thinking about buying some of that stuff anyway.

Awesome engineering. I will be making something similar in the near future too. On the note of the petroleum spray, if it's painted I would think that the paint would seal the coating from too much off gasing.
