recently looking around ebay and noticed that they sell cakes, pf style. Now yes you can make your own, but for some one like me who has never created a cake would this not be a bad idea.. you know to get me started learn the tricks then with time create my own cakes?

You'd be amazed at how easy it is to make BRF cakes. It's flour, vermiculite and water...just three ingredientes and you don't even need a pressure cooker. It would cost less, take less time, and would give you some good experience if you just did it yourself - not to mention the fact that who knows how well jars bought on Ebay will hold up.
Verm at Home Depot is like three dollars for a bag that will last you a LONG time. Water is free obviously. Brown Rice Flour is about four dollars. Mason Jars are like eleven dollars for a dozen...probably cheaper if you shop at a Salvation Army or some place like that. And then a stove to boil your jars. That's it...less than twenty dollars and you'll have more than enough supplies to make a few dozen jars yourself. It's just smarter all around in my opinion - I've never understood people buying pre-made jars off the Internet.

wow, you guys are kinda mean to the noob.
anywho, i would read the PF tek, experiment a little, and if it's too dificult for you at the time being get a few cakes. the mycomonsters on ebay are good people. only 2.50 a cake. still its good experience to make your own and learn good sterilization practices.

I guess I kinda came across as a dick My bad - Sorry, it wasn't intentional.
Anyway, if you do decide to get some jars online, I would definitely recommend mycoshack ***Edited out non Shroomery Vendors url*** He ships very quickly, vacuum seals what he sends so it's always fresh and viable when it arrives, and he's a really nice guy to do business with. If you don't have the time, or just don't want to get the supplies and do it yourself, spending $25-$35 on a dozen or so pre-made jars can be a quick and easy present for any friends who are interested in giving mycology a shot. In my original post about not buying jars off the Internet, I wasn't trying to take away from any of the suppliers online or anything...just saying that there are certain things that I would try out if you want to take mycology seriously - rather than just take the easiest route and buy stuff that's already made, ya know.

Buying pre-made jars of grain off the Internet is understandable too, in case you don't have a pressure cooker or like I've heard from some people who have had a tough time finding rye berries, etc. Either way, like I said, I have nothing against buying jars off the Internet, I just think it's important at one point or another to try it out so you know kinda how everything works.

As you read you'll see things that get your attention as they apply to you and it will all fall together more or less. It just takes a little more reading and learning, you should be well off in a few weeks, just hold off on the ebay for that long.
