Lava rock instead of verm?

I'm doing my first grow, and there is no vermiculite available in my area(believe me, I've looked). I think I'm going to order some off the net, but it will be a while before I could get the money and it gets here, and my spores are coming in this week. I want to start my growing asap so I need an alternative to verm until I get a bag. At the party I was at yesterday I was talking about my problem with a friend and another guy who overheard suggested lava rocks. I had planned on using kitty litter, but I'm not too sure because some kitty litter will turn into paste when dunked and some have additives that could mess up my shrooms so if lava rocks would work that would be excellent. Anyone know if it would work? I was thinking lava rocks would be sort of like perlite and not work. If I can't use lava rocks anyone know any other alternatives to vermiculite other then kitty litter?

Kitty litter is not an alternative bro verm is what you want and need. GL

Ya I got priorities too!!!"

Oh well Looks like I'll just have to wait a bit longer to start my growing. What about growool? In the faqs it says that could be used as an alternative and I believe I did see a bag of that in the neighboring town. Anyone have any input on how well that works?

I have heard that you can used crushed up clay pots for plants. Also i think you can use coco coir as well to replace verm. Cardboard sucks and colonizes slowly but can also be used as a replacement. Those are really the only replacements i know of. You could also possibly just use plain wild bird seed because you dont need verm for that. Lava rock might also work but i doubt it.

Again, no more bad information, crushed up clay pots will NOT replace the functions of vermiculite in the PF tek. Lava rock also will not replace it.
If you cant find verm, then maybe you should, if you dont already have one, get a pressure cooker and just go straight to grains. They really aren't that hard to start off with.
