say Goodbye to 1 Pint & 1 Quart (Mason) Jars???
    #5290363 - 02/11/06 11:08 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

well...

it still stands to be tested (by me anyways),
but Ziploc may have lost their hold on the 1 pint and Quart jar market!!!
maybe this is old news, but i JUST saw these ar Wally World:

Ziploc Twist 'n Loc containers
in 2 and 4 cup sizes (1 pint & 1 quart)

http://www.ziploc.com/twistnloc.asp

they're microwavable if the lid is off (but we all know polyfill or micropore tape can easily solve thais problem)

now all that need to be done is see if they hold up in the PC @ 15 psi fully loaded w/ substrate.

they also have graduated marks on the side for partial measurement.

as sad as it is to say, i didn't have the extra $3-4 to pick up a pack for testing (or the time to fuck w/ it tonight) but they are CHEAP and these would make an AWESOME alternative to glass jars w/ band & lids.

also this will make the microwave tekkers happy...

I sent them an email requesting what material they are made of. This should answer the question of being PC'able without running the chance of melting plastic in your PC.

Retort pouches will IMHO somewhat replace jars.

But, jars will always have there place.

well, i'm not sure what a "retort pouch" is...  so it's nothing new that Agar is talking about something i don't even know about yet.

don't get me wrong, there's a place in my heart for Kerr jars  and i'll always have a lifetime supply...

but i havent started buying Quart jars yet and these would be much easier to deal with- they're cheap and the lids are plastic and customizable.

as far as plastic melting in the PC, let's see...
-plastic Mason Jar lids
-Oven Bags and Autoclave/filter patch bags
-Baby bottles...

you get the idea.

lol, I read retort pouch and I had to do a search on google last night.  That is exactly what I envisioned, MRE's
I would assume that they are cheap to produce and buy in mass quantities?  Probably easier to use because they are so sturdy too.  Are they availible to the consumer market now?  Can you use the same sealer?

check the number on the bottem of the container to se what quality of plastic it is and if it will melt.

I've used these Ziplock jars both in the Microwave and the PC but only for liquid cultures. They work out fine. No melts or warpage yet. I don't know how they will work with grain in the PC though.

No, they are not available in the consumer market - yet.

Yes, you can use an impulse sealer to seal them.

That "- yet" somewhat confuses me. I can't tell if you know some insider info in that you know they'll become popular here like they are in Asia, or if we'll probably see some for sale around the same time we'll be seeing myco-nitro.

Lost or gained? I didn't know that Ziplock ever had a hold on it in the first place.

i like both glass and ziplock jars. the ziplocks are sik for LC's.

I would be more worried about PC'ing them with the verm. in them since the verm retains a higher temp.

With the lid loose in the microwave I usually wrap the tops in a layer of coffee filters held on with a rubber band. This way as they suck air as their cooling it is somewhat filtered. By no means perfect but so far it seems to work.
