i use it sometimes when my machine is doing heavy stuff and i need a graphical environment that doesn't drag the system. i'm using it right now. it's definitely more responsive than gnome, but it's kinda ugly. i don't like having to configure everything in text files. does anyone use fluxbox and like it? what does your desktop look like? how do you quickly access frequently used apps?

i love fluxbox. to realy get the full enjoyment of it, you need to set up your hotkeys. in that pic, i have aterm running so it has no borders and looks like it is running on the 'desktop'.

I don't think anyone who has tried Enlightenment uses Fluxbox. I've been using and loving Enlightenment for years. I tried fluxbox a couple months ago to see what all the fuss was about, but was disappointed. I couldn't believe they would make it so difficult to customize. There isn't even a tool to select wallpaper! E is prettier, friendlier, more feature-rich, and still mad fast. There are lots of configuration options you can pick through, and there are graphical menus for them.

I have a related question. I've been searching around for a new window manager for Linux. Basically i'm looking for the most customizable window manager possible, in terms of how i can make my desktop, menus, and windows look. Bascially what i'm looking for is the Linux equivalent of Litestep for Windows, which was the most customizable GUI i've ever used. Litestep was cool because there were no required widgets to be placed on the desktop and everything that was on your desktop was completely optional.
So i've heard that fluxbox is very customizable, and uses text files to configure stuff which is cool IMO. I also like the fact that clicking the desktop brings up your main menu, which GNOME does not do (i currently use GNOME). So is fluxbox the most customizable window manager is there something even better?

if you like beautiful twinkling stuff and general asthetic beauty, use enlightenment. if you dont mind writing your own menus to be exactly what you want in text files and use command lind to accomplish certain tasks (if you see my desktop pic above, the way i took the pic of my desktop is the 'import' command in the upper white aterm), then fluxbox is for you. some of the brass here (like vampire999) love and use enlightenment. i prefer fluxbox.
the problem most people have with fluxbox is that when they get it, it is as plain as possible... just a foundation for you to build whatever you want into it. i use kde and gnome programs with it, just whatever suits my needs. for example, i dont use desktop icons and change my wallpaper regularly, i use hotkeys or the menu. if i were to decide to start using desktop icons and wallpaper changes, i would install idesk and rox.
since i like to have a visual cue into what my system is doing, i installed gkrellm2. that is what you see running on the right side of my screen.
i do like a wallpaper and transparencies, so i installed feh to support those.
the best way to describe fluxbox is it is an empty canvas of a window manager.... you can put in or leave out whatever you want.

Try wmii. A bit harsh at first, but with a little practice you'll get work done faster.
Warning: VERY minimalist.

Windows get tiled automatically in tiled mode. Pure magic
