Ok, ok... so Im semi euphoric since Ive finally birthed my first cake after 2-3 days of full colonization... I have a rubbermaid setup with perlite and I have 1 cake there sitting on a sheet of aluminum foil (my other are just not about ready yet)... I handled the cake as least as nescessary since all I did was 'tap' and 'dump' into my FC... Question is I didnt even scrape the dry layer of vermiculite so my question is...
Will this be a vial for other contaminants to settle in??
Im guessing either A) that will happen or, B) The mycellium will take over that thin layer...
Should I bring my cake out and scrape it off?

hm, well I was planning about cold shocking (dunking comes after the first flush anyway right?) But will it really make a difference? I mean I am already introducing light and cooler temperatures... Maybe thats all it needs to trigger pinning. Think Im too late for it anyway??
P.S.
I am watching my cakes like watching paint dry to see when pinning begins... I might go without food for days...

You can dunk before you birth to rehydrate the cakes if they seem to have lost alot of moisture, but if the jars were fully colonized in only 2-3 days the dunk might not prove to valuable.
As for the cold shocking, I don't know much except that from what I've read a drop of 10 to 20 degrees F is best to initiate pinning, or at least speed up the process. If you've dropped the temps alittle bit and you already seem to have enough light then you might not need to do anycold shocking, but hey it couldn't hurt too much....

i hope you dabbed your cake with a paper towel after you birthed. the droplets of water can cause contams. you should also look into pf's double end casing tek it can really boost flush size.place your cake on a soaked and drained jar cap of verm and just drop (eye dropper) some spring water on the top casing layer and keep doing that until you start to see some pins (not to wet though) then lay off and let them go for it. follow the pf tek and you should be fine. dunking will help with other flushes there after.
